Is it fun biking in Britain?

Didn't she go to the Caribbean on her own recently? Surely she wouldn't
begrudge you a week away on the bike.

Two fucking weeks, but, i'm away quite a bit this year. France, two track
days that consist of two days each & nearly every Sunday morning. If i could
organise something, my bike mates are all married so there's no chance of
getting us all together. Biking on ones own is pretty shit really.

Anyone fancy a week down to Gibraltar, accomodation free. as there's a very
nice apartment near Casares we could use once there. Some nuts roads around
& about, especially the road up from Feungirola to Ronda.

    :)

Well quite. Although I have to say I don't like 'em too twisty. We
tend to look on those passes which consist of short straight followed
by hairpin, repeated a number of times over, as opportunities for good
views rather than hooning, particularly downhill.

There are roads in the north of England and Scotland that, bendwise, I
have enjoyed riding as much as any road abroad, but they are fewer,
shorter and just not on the same stupendous scale.

    It is.

Removed in most of Greater Manchester - with the exception of Bolton -
    about 2 years ago.

They're great fun on the Tiger, but I generally avoid them on the MV &
go for the more flowing ones instead.

Apart from Spain, I've ridden in those countries so I have to assume you've
not ridden many of the roads around the north of our own fair land.

    I noticed.

I suppose we could 'warm up' with a blast across the Sahara. I've got
a bike that'd give me a slight chance of not dying on the side of a
    sand dune but he's fucked.

I should of course have said north Scotland, as that was the bit being
    discussed. So yes, I'm sure.

    Too right there is.

You do get decent roads in Britain but they're not very common and you
don't usually get 10 miles plus of perfect biking road. Instead you
end up with routes that are good for a while then shit, then back to
being somewhere near then another spell of rubbish.

You know that over here the police presence is always lurking
somewhere in the distance and the better the road the more likely they
are to find a spot to hide with a hand help speed camera.

One of the biggest reasons why I enjoy biking abroad more than I do in
the UK these days is that drivers over there (forget Belgium) are
generally more aware of bikes and they're certainly more tolerant of
bikes being ridden at high speed than you normally find over here.

    You're a miserable old ****.
generally it's not, between April and October. I walk to work between
Liverpool St. and St.Pauls every working day, and I would estimate
that it's *proper* wet maybe 10 times a year.
    I don't care about that.
    cars are easy to overtake.
I regularly do "three-figure speeds"[1]. I've not even been stopped by
the cops, never mind "locked up".
if you say so. I've not noticed any instance of this.
    see above.
too me, a canal boat holiday sounds like the dullest thing on Earth.
But then, you like Morris Dancing.
not read Bike (or in fact, any biking mag) for years.

[1] not really on the KTM[2] but on it's predecesors, and will
certainly do so on the 12R when I get it.
[2] I did see ~105mph on the clock following Ogden down the M1 weekend
before last, though that wasn't especially "fun".

That's because anybody with an ounce of sense is still in fucking bed.

You know what happened to the early bird? It died of sleep deprivation.

It can be, but it can also be pretty spot on. The last three weekends for
    example.
Get off the beatena nd it's not overly pricey (and that from a tight arsed
    northerner)
Point made, but they do offer plenty of chances to piss the drivers off as
    you waddle past.
I can live with Gatso's (sort of) as they're in fixed positions and when you
know where they are, you can adjust speed to suit, but only for a few
seconds. If it was a cop in a car or a cop in a camera van, different story.
I never even think about parking, I just get onto the pavement and leave it.
Never been charged or fined. Ever.
    Not recently.
Because it was so different to what you'd usually do?
    I've not seen it.
