You want to learn about diamond grading - colour, clarity, inclusions etc.
before looking for a bargain. What size and cut do you want?

The thing about diamonds is that their production and distribution is
rather controlled by the World Diamond Council and places like De
Beers. They keep the price high by carefully moderating the amount of
    the product that is available.

This is why you don't get 'cheap' diamonds, unless it's from QVC and
is 'genuine diamonique' or 'geniune diamonté.'

I dunno I expect the same sort of sad prat like My Baby dated who spent
3 grand to buy cheap diamonds and got exactly what he paid for.

I am seriously considering investing a grand in a few cheap but nice
    stones and trying it.

Absolutely. Although I should point out that you can walk into the same
shops and buy the same discount wholesale stones for the same price as
    me.[1]

Hatton Garden and similar sell stones, they sell to any **** who has the
money. If you want to cut out the middle man and save a fortune then go
    straight to them.

If you are buying even a moderately expensive stone they will also offer
    free help and advice.

You don't have to get ripped off unless you want to be.

[1] Once you have the stone talk to me about getting a seriously nice
ring/setting made for it, then I'll take your money.

  11. Indeed. I'd go further. They are delighted to meet and deal with the
public, and they go out of their way to match stones and actually exercise
their expertise, instead of merely sparring with others in the trade. We
had Mrs Rosbif's engagement ring made by a friend, who told us the
specifications to ask for in Hatton Garden. The bloke there couldn't have
been more helpful, and we came away with stones [a sapphire and 2 diamonds]
which had the goldsmithing friend mighty impressed, by both the quality of
the jewels and the price paid. Be prepared to give it your time and
attention, and allow them to guide you. Remember, they have devoted their
lives to the love and study of gemstones, and if you show interest in their
passion you will be rewarded, and you will learn. The same goes for most
    things in life, I suppose.
