Sure, and if it had been accessible from Albertville I'd have been the
first to recommend it, but it's kinda out of the way a bit, almost
impossible to get to without a car or a very expensive, hour and a
    half, taxi ride.

Well, I'm hardly justified in taking a position as I only skied for the
first time in 2002 and she did take to it rather well last year.

One of the benefits of only being 11 I suppose.

Give here here - I'll soon put her back on the straight and narrow[1].

[1] Not nearly so straight nor so narrow as they used to be, of
    course.

We went to Tignes when I was not much more than a beginner. Plenty to
keep SWMBO amused who was a good intermediate, but lots of nice blue
runs IIRC up on a plateau sort of area.

Cross country skiing round the lake if you are in to that.

    Certainly not pretty though.

Hmmm... are you saying that Les Arcs isn't convenient or family-friendly?

TBH I was really thinking of the non-skiing activities, both for the
non-skier mentioned and for the general getting around for evening
    activities.

Certainly it's both convenient and family-friendly for skiing,
depending (obviously) on exactly where you choose to stay. Personally

I prefer to stay down in Bourg, to maximise convenience for the other
resorts, but for a family of beginners that's probably less of a draw
    ;-)

Perhaps you could advise the OP of where the best bits would be for
    his requirements?

It'll come as no surprise that I think Tignes is pretty good for non-
skiers, but of course it does depend on what the non-skier has in mind
to do. Off the top of my head though, there's the new Swimming Pool/
Gym/Spa centre, other hotel spas, husky-dog sledging, guided snow-shoe
walks, ice diving, ice karting, skating (casual and speed varieties)
parapenting, ski-dooing, bowling, cinema, the media centre and small
mueseum at the tourist office, some decent restaurants (some very
decent ones a taxi drive away).

Sure it's not the prettiest town, but Les Brevieres is a bit sweeter
and can be visited via a free bus and chair, or the return trip to Val
d'Isere is about 10 Euros - not that I think Val is much prettier than
Tignes, but it's a change of scene and there are more shops.

I'd say Tignes is very family-friendly as well and there's a large
choice of good Ski Schools with some excellent British-owned smaller
outfits too. The skiing itself has pretty much got something for
    everyone, particularly intermediates.

Plenty of good resorts within easy distance have been mentioned but
you could also have a look at Les Saisies which is a very good family
resort with well above average snow record. It is probably the closest
decent resort to Albertville and cheaper than many of the big name
resorts. Ski area is the large Espace Diamant with 185km of slopes.
    see http://www.peakretreats.co.uk/ski/les-saisies.htm or
    http://www.skicollection.co.uk/Ski/Les-Saisies.htm although
accommodation featured there may well be fully booked for half term.
There is plenty info on the resort in any case.

I'm supposed to run my scooter on super unleaded, on account of it
having a high compression cylinder head. It got normal unleaded when
super went up to about 130 p/l! Back on the ultra now though.

Les Saisies is definitely a good choice then! It's where all the
cross country competitions were held during the 1992 Winter Olympics
so you don't get much better than that in France.

Agreed - and the skiing around the Espace Diamant offers the chance to a
linked circuit within a day and without having to race the lifts.
Lots of variety, charming villages and a pretty relaxed vibe make this one
of our great discoveries last season.
