Youngster. I used to use a 12-sided thruppeny bit to buy a bag of chips (in those non-pc days there was a joke about spanners and a north london religious community) Petrol was 2/3 per gallon, and the price was so stable that it was on an enamel sign screwed to the garage wall! And nights of passion were really half hours in the Odean, or more luxuriantly in the cloak room at the Pier Pavillion, Sarfend. Usually having 'scrumped' a prophylactic from someone else's coat pocket, to save the bother involved in replenishing my own stock. I once 'scrumped' one with german packaging that glowed in the dark, which resulted in severe giggling rather than the expected outcome.
>, says... I was re-reading an old homebrewing book last night. It mentions making beer for less than 3d/pint.
My old ma had a coin she found at the local fairground when a bit of a gel. 'twere marked "1/4 farthing" Lord alone knows what happened to it. According to 't interfubes, it were only meant to be used in Ceylon. http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/pics/qv/frac/qf52.jpg Why it came to be in an essex fairground, one can't imagine. I unferget the half-farthngs being spoke of, but there were not in use in my liftimes. Whole farthings were, mind. With Jenny Wren on the back, and the old knig on the front. Ship ha'pennies and Wren farthings. and old Britannia on a penny the size of a wagon wheel. Such days, such days.
Parts of me were more supple in those days. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Aprilia Shiver Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
Aged fifteen, I went to the local brewery and bought a hundredweight (remember them?) of crushed malt and got a recipe from one of the workers. I think the malt cost me thirty shillings. Hops grew in profusion all down one of our hedges, so I probably beat that price somewhat. Note to authorities: Mea culpa! It was illegal in those days. I'm moat *awfully* sorry...

Then the intertubes is differently crect: it was a British coin. There was also a smaller one called a 'mite'. This was a sixth of a farthing and was, I bleeve, the smallest copper coin in the fairly recent British moneybag. Oh, but they were. My ole man used to bring one back occasionally from the bank where he worked - well, two usually, as he had to balance the books, and pay a farthing for them. I goove it was well after the war (second WW!) that they became tough. Aye. Days have become devalued innit.
