Both. You can't let that whimpering apology for a wet rag off too.

    Good Troy.

We could spin the thread out with clothyards, rods, chains, leagues,
ells, bushels, drams, and of course, cow pi.

There was a minimum quantity of (beer) you had to brew to get a licence,
    IIRC.

No licence was required for cider or perry.[And no duty levied up to a
certain volume, so, even into my late twenties I could ohl cider
    (retail) at 6d per pint.]

On our old gimmers real ale pub crawl last week we tried some TSA
"Double Espresso". Foul it was. Fortunately we had already reacquainted
ourselves with Holden's Old Ale and Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild.

So was Brenda's (not Brenda) price and position, allegedly.
I used to dispense it at 2/3d a gallon

4/11 is the cheapest I can remember, I recall being well
ipssed fof when it went up so that you could no longer
get four gallons for a quid.

I'm no fan of beer with flavourings stuffed in for effect. SHRM is a
wonderful beer, however, all too rarely seen hereabouts. I don't think
they make much/enough of it. The "Mild" is a bit of a misnomer, IMO
and I think it might put off mainstream quaffers.

Indeed. For SHRM think "sump oil" in hue and far from Mild in strength.

An old gimmer's bus pass and the 558 from Wolvo to Dudley are excellent
    resources for such expeditions.

When that happened I couldn't cram four gallons in my tank - I goove
    three was the limit.

Yes, it's still quite normal, if not common, in many parts of the
continent to use pounds as an informal unit. I've certainly heard folk
asking for a demi-livre de beurre, for example. Pint I'm not so sure
about - it's certainly used as an informal measure for beer, but I
suspect it's come about in recent years from Brit influence, rather
than being a throwback to earlier units.

It's that leftover 1/7th that's the best bit.

  19. Five bob a gallon when I started putting it in a Vespa. I usually
    carried a spare half-crown for get-me-home petrol.

Some of those I knew had a spare £1 note screwed under the number
plate for such emergencies. The thinking being it was too much of a
faff to retrieve for beer but not in case of a real emergency.
