It doesn't have to be a road bike ...

Out to Eastern Creek yesterday to watch a mate in his first race with St
    George Motor Cycle club.

He was where they put the first timers (combo of F3 and F5) - he on a Ducati
Monster, road tyres, engines only mildly warmed up.

He did ok, but what surprised me was how well the up market chookies (Super
Motards?) went - Husquvanas and KTM's that would have been right at home in
mild dirt - yeah the roadies did them on the straight but over the hilly
bits at the back of the course they were competitive and the mate said they
were bloody hard to get round.

I guess its like Mr Armstrong said - 'It's not about the bike'.

Kinda interesting so see grass roots racing - lotsa grey hair in evidence on
    the track as well.

    Best, Andrew

Light, and an upright riding position with wide bars.

At high speeds and with serious skills, low with clipons (and so
    aerodynamically better) is good.

But motors with lots of grunt and light bikes with wide bars are
stunningly easy to ride fairly fast.

Give it a try, you might be surprised.

    I embarrassed a few sports bike riders at PI in turns 2, 4 ,5, 6, 9,
    10 and 11 on the vStrom 1000

but real riders on real bikes made a mockery of me everywhere else

You should have seen how good some of the CR500's used to go with RGV
wheels and slicks... There were some amazing riders on them too

Simon and Dave Dormat were amazing to watch wipe the 750s round Oran
Park and Amaroo... Would have been worse round Wakefield!!

Didnt some bloke Someone White get 8th on a YZ490 at the Aussie
superbikes at Winton in the 80's?

I think Troy Corser first came to attention running a big chookie-smoker
at a "Stars of Tomorrow" meeting at PI.

Was funny, the year I was there for the Stars meeting, his brother
Dale wanted a newer bike, his dad said no until he could do the
laptimes Troy was doing on his one!

  7. I recall a guy on a trailie making mockery of the guys on open class
sports class at Calder the time (mid - 80s, pre superbike class). If
it wasn't for the main straight I reckon he would have had them
nailed. This was the short track before they extended it. Through the
corners they just couldn't do anything about him.

They were probably sitting up on the picks hard as they could tryin to
slow up, while he grabbed another gear!
