I've noticed that UKRM seems to take a lot longer to update than many
other NGs. If I have just one message to fetch, uit takes several
seconds of furious (cable) modem activity. Given that a Usenet message
is usually a few lines of text with a couple of dozen lines of headter
text, just what the hell is all that activity about?

    X-Trace: newsfe4-win.ntli.net gives the clue

The cheesey server was being a **** last week and I flipped back to
Virgin/NTL. Very slow at times. I imagine the servers are very old and not
getting any support. Once they die I expect they will kill them off for
good like most other pikey ISPs.

NTL carry binaries so I imagine a lot of the bandwidth is taken up by this.

    I'm back on cheesey now

At a guess the relatively huge volume of posts means taking time to
sort out what has and hasn't already been retrieved.

The question was more general, rather than specifically to the recent
service, though that sort of triggered it.
    I may follow soon.

Aah. I had a vague idea it was NG volume related.

Seconded. There might also be an issue with stored messages. Purging
    the group may help [1]
