What's to stop a South African company like Sasol turning round and
telling the EU to **** off with their fine and just carrying on as
before? Does the EU have any judicial powers to collect these fines
    from anyone?

  3. The fines are enforceable within the EU against EU companies .

In Sasols case its more to do with its products or goods made from its
products being excluded from the EU marketplace

The ret of the world is a much bigger place than the EU and petroleum
products and by-products are getting increasingly more expensive. I'd
lay a tenner that the EU need the oil companies more than the oil
    companies need the EU.

I think you underestimate the power of the EU. We're nearly 3/4 of a
billion people with a combined GDP higher than that of the US. I think
    they'll sit up and listen.

Paraffin heating oil is between 54p and 64p a litre in the UK at the
    moment.

  8. Which sounds about right, relatively.
Are you a regular user and can you recall what it was a couple of years
ago? Actually, it would have been four years ago I was surprised at the
price. It might have been a purely local price hike, but the garage
owner did tell me at the time it was the same all over.

Well, no oil means no heating or hot water.
It's not gone up that much. IIRC, it's about 10p/litre more now than
    three/four years ago.

  10. Ah, see below.
Cross-purposes; I meant pump (forecourt) paraffin. I assumed you were in
the habit of buying some of that specifically, for whatever purposes.

    Ah, my mistake.

Is there a difference between the two?

  12. It's essentially the same stuff, but the forecourt gear is often
de-odourised (think Pink, etc) for use in indoor and greenhouse heaters
and lamps. I'm surprised at how many parry heaters are still around, and
I expect there will be a few house fires this winter as people drag some
old shitey and unsafe ones out of the shed.

Considering the price of heating oil is less than 50% of petrol, I can't
see why forecourt paraffin would be the same price.

  14. It used to be dirt cheap, probably nearly as cheap as heating oil at the
time, which is why I was rather taken aback at the pump price last time
I looked. I think it was/is a much smaller customer base and an extra
cost in production, but mostly greed on somebody's part.
