The wife has suggested we go to Italy on the bike. How long will that take?

Eh? Can you not use a map then? Or one of the many websotes, such as
mappy.com, that will calculate distance and times for you?

What you lose going up the Alps you gain on the way down.

I was after someones personal biking experience rather than a distance
calculator. Things like Alps tend to slow you down. Does mappy account for
    that?

er yeah and it tells me 17hrs 21mins which is useless. I want to know how
long practically speaking. We are hardly going to ride non stop for 17hrs.
    Sore arse from hell.....

Including the time for her to get out of the house after she says she's
    ready to go?

Please include some content from the post(s) to which you're replying.
Posting etiquette here is explained in the FFAQ.

As for Italy, maybe if you gave some idea of what you were riding, how
long you and your missus are happy to spend in the saddle (fnaar),
what sort of speed you like to ride at etc. etc. etc. some more advice
    might be forthcoming.

Generally, I find Mappy times pretty accurate, including
fuel/coffee/food stops, and that they take into account the type of
road on which you're riding, so I'd suggest that you simply divide the
17 hrs by the number of hours you're happy to ride for and that's how
    many days it'll take you.

  10. You can do it in one solid day from Calais if you start promptly.

If you're smart you'll go across the channel the previous night and
'start' from Bethune or St Omar or even Rheims if you push it.

To give some clue I recently did St Omar to Chamonix Mt Blanc leaving
at 7:30am. I arrived at Chamonix at 5pm. In no way did we push it or
skimp on breaks. (Travelled about 85mph)

Mt Blanc is 11km's away from Italy.

Well that kinda depends on where you're setting off from. If Dover, you
can get to the Italian border in a day easily.

You've not got the idea of this biking lark, have you? Or any idea on
leaving some quoted text in, either...

Well, duh... Italy's quite a big place, y'know? Plus, you haven't
indicated where you'll be coming from, what sort of bike you ride, etc.

As a rule of thumb, I'd say allow a couple of days assuming you're lazy
(which, given you've clearly not checked out the FFAQ, is a good bet)
and don't wan't to be sick of the sight of a motorcycle when you reach
    the other end.

That'd be a decent time from Dover to, say, Bologna, and allows for long
stops, fag-breaks, etc. and an overnight somewhere dull in the middle.

Of course, you could "do a Ginge" and ride through the night sustained
by coffee and amphetamines and do it in a single 18hr hit.
