Don't forget the things she will have forgotten - we usually get to the end
of the road at least a couple of times. This takes time. [1]

I'll have you know there was very little coffee, and absolutely no
    amphetamines.

There was stubbornness, a ham and cheese baguette, and plenty of water.

    OK.

Florence is 20 hours from my front door, allowing for ferries, fuel
stops, 3 meals and general waiting time.

You'd run out of petrol too.

Take an hour's break every 5 or so.

Eight hours from Florence to my house, then seven to the channel. An
hour and a half for the crossing, then it'd be what, three hours from
    Dover to Derby.

So <adds it all up> 19.5 hours. You must have been taking your time
    with the meal breaks ;-)

Heh. In fact, my 8 hours included going that way, albeit via the
tunnel (pass still snowed under). I later realised that going via St.
Gottard would have cut at least an hour off my journey. I just hadn't
thought about it, as I'd deliberately planned the route down to
include the Aosta valley and just bought a return ticket for the
    tunnel...

You can get from the south of England to the Italian border in a day.
It won't be a very enjoyable day, tho, especially for your wife on the
back (assuming this is the case, and she doesn't have her own bike).

If I were doing it I'd get an early ferry from Dover, and then blast
as much of France as I could in the first day, without wearing myself
out, and stop somewhere near the start of the alps (Calais to Geneva
is about 500 miles, which for most folk is enough to do in one day).

Then, the next day I'd enter 'tourist' mode and take some interesting
routes through the mountains into northern Italy.

Note than Italy is a big long country too, so if you're planning on
going to Sicily then you'll need to add at least another day on to get
    down there.

Sounds interesting, but I can't help feeling that you'r adding a lot
of miles to the trip by going so far east. Going down through
Switzerland and over the Gottard or San Bernadino would allow equally
interesting routing and a much shorter journey.
Naah, luggage doesn't need to slow down real men, does it? Unless
you've got the kitchen sink attached, of course. Mind yew, having a
couple of days in one place in the middle has to be a good idea, if it
    can fit with other plans.
