    Given that the OP was talking about "Getting to Italy" rather than
    specifically the Dolomites your route does add significant distance.
    But yes, _if_ you're planning to go to the NE of Italy, then your
    route would be as direct as any. Personally, I tend to look at the
    closest/most direct point[1] when thinking about how far away a
    country is.

    [1] So I could be in Italy in about two hours from here, via St
    Gottard.

    I suspect that this would have been some droid not realising that CH
    wasn't part of the EU. I've never heard of an EU policy that didn't
    also include Switzerland.

    I just took a look at my ins docs (carole nash)..

    it has 2 lines listing what's covered and says:

    a) any member of the EU
    b) Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

    AIUI, for many legal and economic reasons, Liechtenstein is counted as
    an extension of Switzerland. Someone else can do the chapter and
    verse thing.
