Is she the Twilight woman? I've avoided that nonsense.

That's some stiff competition you're up against there.

Not sure i'd go that far.

I think we should start the Harry Potter Jihad back up. Book(s)
suitable for adults, or a childrens book ?

    It's really good.
Ah I was wondering who had it.
No idea, I've still got half a shelf full of yours. I've designated
one shelf for 'books I've borrowed', that way it is easier to keep
track. There's <counts> at least 4 different UKRMers books sat on it.

I haven't, because I've been watching Off Kilter on catch up. It's
top quality Meades, extremely enjoyable and visually delightful.

After the actions of the Japs and the Nazis the Yank and Brit peoples were
pretty happy to see them incinerated.

After the war everyone got a bit self concious about Dresden et all and
Harris was no National Hero. I don't know if there was ther same in the US.

Nuking two civilian cities, even though they had military installations
really was out of order but the nips really were being fucking awkward about
    losing.

I shall try and see some of the sites of the hugely successful Mindanao
    campaign next month.

That's a tough one. I assume the SS Religious Order was trying to prevent
    the Coming of Des.
We went in a bit too early.

I don't think he was a NH there either.
I do wonder if we will ever kow if it was cost-effective in terms of
human lives and suffering. It probably was from the Allies' POV.

Would a demonstration drop on some less-populous but still significant
part of Japan (say the region of a remote but important temple, palace
or military target) have had the desired effect, or would it simply
have indicated to the Japanese High Command that the Allies were
"weak" and weren't prepared to use them on serious targets? Would it
have demonstrated the destructive power as effectively?

There are probably books about this somewhere.

I know that after the war my grandparents didn't give a flying ****
about civilians dying in Dresden, all they cared about was the fact
that their son had died fighting the Germans and if another million
German civilians had died and he'd lived it would have been a better
    result.

Now we can look back on it this attitude seems wrong but at the time
I'd have been exactly the same.
Surely the theory is that a large number of allied troops would have
died if they'd had to invade Japan to defeat the Japanese army so the
    decision was justified?

A big, whole-hearted *DING*, from here.

And I, for one, think it's a fucking disgrace that there was never a
    Bomber Command campaign medal.

That was an utterly spineless decision that could and should be reversed
tomorrow it any contemporary politician ever grew a pair one thousandth
the size of the those on the poor bastards who climbed into aircraft
night after night in the sure and certain knowledge that they were every
unlikely to make it all the way through a tour.

Much easier to hope they all just die first, isn't it?

Abso-fucking-lutely, if we'd have got rid of a few more fucking Jews we
wouldn't have the problems we have now.
Yep, that's why we kill civvies, easy targets and makes governments
    think about voters.

I really mustn't post after the pub :(

HSB, the devils brew, I have no idea what I was thinking of. I now hav
a headache and the remains of a chicken madrass to deal with[1]. Still,
on the plus side, some spokes and spoke key arrived, so this afternoon
will be spent with a bit of therapeutic bicycle wheel bilding :)

[1] Why is it, when you are totally cunted, a chicken madrass seems like
a good idea. I mean, you can hardly fucking walk so you think "I know!
I'll pop down the Indian for a Chicken Madrass I can wear tomorrow".
I'll be finding bits of it for days.

I watched that the first time round - many years ago - and thought it
was excellent. Spotted it on DVD a few months ago, for very few quids,
so had to have it. We sat down and watched the first ep, followed by
the second - and then made time to finish it very shortly afterwards.
One of those rare things that stands the test of time.
