  2. Took me by surprise, as I thought he was a bit younger and had a lot
more acting left in him. He always seemed to be just on the verge of
    hitting the big time.

    Saves spreading them so much.

Yeah. Odd looking bloke and that probably held him back from the really big
time, with the "importance" of image being more of an asset than talent.
At her age, she could spread them from here to eternity and not get a bite.

  4. I don't think anyone's doubting the deceased's acting abilities, just
that he didn't make it as big as he deserved. Largely because of his
enormous conk. And being Northern, of course.

And maybe because of being a good actor amongst many good actors. It seems
silly to call one out as being better than the others.

I guess it depends on your definition of 'make it big'. He had major
roles in some of the biggest films ever made, and I think we can assume
he made a very good living indeed from his work.

I'd be prepared to bet he chose not to play the fame game rather than
    was over looked.

It became a running joke here, the "Spot the Postlethwaite" game. He
seemed to be in almost every film we watched, for ages - rarely as
lead, but usually as a character or with a big supporting role. I'm
quite sure he made a good living from it, with a longer run than many
    of the flash-in-the-pan lead actors.

IMDB lists 94 titles in 35 years. An excellent career. He didn't have
the looks to be a leading man, and he couldn't carry a major studio
release, but the same could be said of many great actors.

Are you saying there was no further up "the ladder" he could have gone?

No doubt he made a good living, but ask people who played the priest in "The
Omen" or the gangster in "Whatever" [1] film he was in and you'll more than
likely get blank looks. Ask the same people who played Indiana Jones and
you're likely to get the right answer. There's making a living and making it
big, but of course, you know that.
Well that's something only he knows and he's keeping his gob shit.

"Not a day unemployed"? He did ~3 movies/TV shows per year. Since
shooting rarely takes over a month for a movie, how can any actor say
they're not unemployed most of the year?

plus the voiceovers for commercials, narrating audiobooks, TV/radio
appearances & premieres for each of the movies in each of the different
markets, writing his autobiography etc etc

What? Are you insane? The films he was on would have had shooting
schedules of at least three months. Little films like Brassed Off may
have been 6 week shoots, which is standard for low budget films.

You're also forgetting the time spent rehearsing and even researching a
role. And that's before you consider all of the other work actors do ...
    like theatre, voice-overs etc. etc.

Sure, the shooting schedule for an entire movie may take that long,
but no actor who isn't a lead, and rarely even then, would be on set
for as much as half that.
I'm not forgetting any of that, but there are probably only a handful
of actors in the west, if any, who work 200 days a year, and PP
certainly wasn't one of them. For the last 15 years, at least, he
didn't do much stage work, IMDB lists his voiceovers, and to take one
year as an example, in 2008 he did one 9 minute short and one feature
movie in which he played a minor role. To think he worked that entire
year is ludicrous. If one wants to make the claim that since he signed
a contract in January to act in a movie that didn't start shooting til
June that he was employed that entire time, fine, but that's not what
most people think of as being employed.

He did well to work this past 10 years. IIRC he developed the cruelest
cancer of all around 2000 and has been caught out by secondaries.

You're assuming that because they're not on set that they're not
employed or working. You'd be wrong. It may not be what normal workers
would class as working but that's because it's a rather unique industry
    in many ways.
IMDB is not the most trustworthy source of someone's CV. My page, for
example (and yes, I'm on there, too) is woefully inaccurate both
regarding what's actually on there and also the huge amount of work that
    isn't.

That's me. And I have been a best boy, and a grip, too. In fact, I've
just finished a job as a grip on a music vid.

Which also shows how unreliable IMDB can be - I'm working on a feature
that's not on IMDB (at least, not at the moment) and I've done TV ads
and music videos which IMDB also doesn't list. And the film listing for
Cuckoo has me as a fucking trainee, which the tossers won't change.
