  1. Works been a bugga for the last couple of weeks with an increasing sense
of impending doom, so it was nice to hear the following on the local BBC
news tonite when they were reporting on the local childrens hospice.
Apparently, the lady who donated the land for the building asked for an
annual rent of a dozen red roses each year on midsummers day.

Made me smile it did. Life's not all that fu*ked up.

Sensible move. It probably keeps some sort of ownership. A bloke I know, his
Great Grandad paid for a school to be built in his village in 1880 (donated
the land etc.), the school got small and the local authority decided to
close the school and sell it off. Bloke says "this stuff was donated/built
for the good of the village I want it back so I can donate it as a village
hall". Authority says "no we want the money". The courts will decide.

By charging rent the lady may be keeping the use of the land safe.
