See, this is what somebody said the other year at a platyfest. They noticed
my rusty old MTB and recoiled in amazement. I had to ride the thing up and
    down the street.

Maybe not. Hell, even I could climb them!

But the fact of the matter is, they are mountains.

Bullshit. You've clearly googled around to find a specific,
British-only definition in some dictionary or other, but it doesn't
    make it correct.

And all the ones you list in England are less than 1000m, which is
almost sea-level, FFS. The flat we're buying in Engelberg is at 1000m,
and is at the bottom of a mountain. On a flat bit. Not up a mountain
    at all.

Of course I googled it, but that came from dictionary.com which is
    hardly a bastion of Britishness.
    Irrelevant.

It is subjective and relative and the OP made reference to "England's
highest mountains" so as a benchmark for England, the ones I posted are
    "mountains".

    OK then, I give up.

ukrm's definition of a mountain: a natural elevation of the earth's
surface that cannot be merely walked up - it will require specialized
clothing, specialized equipment and extreme levels of fitness to climb
and must be higher than Ace's skiing lodge or whatever he wants to call
    it.

    There - what've I missed?

  20. We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "CT" <> saying
    something like:

    Of English mountains...
Just think of the size they used to be - tens of thousands of feet of
unclimbable majesty, topped by the meanest motherfucking clouds on
earth. A mountain range to be proud of, not one of these modern
mamby-pamby mountains which any old **** can clamber up.
