The motorcyclists around here all wear either wear black leather or some
dark colour (black/grey/dark blue) cordura jacket either with black
leather pants or black or blue jeans (mostly kevlar but not exclusivly).

The exception is a few women who have pink panels on their black cordura
    jackets (Jodz amongst that lot).

The push bike riders tend to be mostly alternative lifestyle people and
wear what could loosely be called 'hippy' clothes.

There is a very small group of racing push bike club members who ride
around the area but they are only a small percentage of total numbers.

OK I've looked... what's your point?

Second that. I was making the following point:

When did men start to stop peacocking? Probably around 1850, not 100
    years earlier, as JL thought.

I could have added: when did they start up again? Prolly around 1950 and
as a reaction to being in a real uniform. Paisley in the '60s was more a
    guy thing.

Round here there's enough cyclists that the municipal services people
refer to the specially marked lanes as 'Lycra Lanes'. I've only been to
Pie In The Sky once but on that occasion all the motorcyclists were
exactly as G-S describes (including me). I don't regard the protective
gear I wear as showing off.

    Teeheehee!

I remember seeing a TV comedy sketch on that premise years ago, a TV
camera crew show up to an advertised "cock fighting" event, and accuse the
venue operator of cruelty to animals.
"What animals?!" he says. The camera pans to show 2 naked guys, hands
behind backs, heading into the arena to do battle...

Cyclists don't regard what they wear as such either.

The subcultures wear the stuff they do for a reason, and can justify
    it quite well.

Cyclists wearing bright coloured jerseys or shorts are wearing them
for the same reason you see people in Dainese and Alpine Star racerep
leathers: signaling their part in the subculture. And both are
signalling the same: "I do the fast stuff, see I am like a racer"

Not everyone wishes to signal it in that way. Plenty do, else the
stuff wouldn't be all over the place.

Plenty of men will wear bright clothing to signal things they want
people to know. What they are signalling may make no sense to people
not of that culture, and subgroups within the culture might be
actively opposed to the signal, thinking it "wannabe" or similar.

    Humans is complex beasts.

I don't know much about pushies but from what I hear about the Pie in
the Sky carpark motorcyclists it's all about poseurs and preening and
it's only the poseurs and preeners who go (or maybe *stay*) there.
I still contend that'even for the subset "motorcyclists" those few are
not anything like the average. ('though it may be more-so for cyclists
who seem [from an outsider's eye] to be more about "look at me; I'm
    making a statement").

They wear the lycra and jerseys and shoes because they are comfortable
    and designed for the job.

It is surprisingly hard to get non-lairy jerseys, and there's a
subset of riders who do as many motorcyclists do - wannabe and
definitely are - and wear gear to show they support their heroes.
And others who are members of clubs and wear club gear.

I find it fascinating how many people can't handle the idea that the
lycra shorts are actually a sensible bit of kit.

    Zebee
    - who wears woolen riding longs in winter and cargo shorts or 3/4
lycra in summer. As I ride a 'bent I don't need the padding, but
I'm fully in favour of the comfort.

OK; I'm not very internet-savvy and neither am I much of a detective so
pardon me if this is stupid but this is the original message:
Could the fact that the bit in question was a *footnote* be why it's not
    in Google?

Heh heh; it was in a Blake Edwards movie too (starring John Ritter).
The hero (JR) wore a luminous condom and the nemesis wore a different
colour. In the final scene the nemesis discovers the hero in bed with
his woman and the blacked-out screen shows the two condoms fighting a-la
    light-sabres in Star Wars.

Sadly that was the only memorable part of the movie (including the title).

I did specify where to look, Geoff.

My point was that, at PITS, there is a goodly degree of "peacocking" in
bright showy colours and also the flaunting of jewelry, in the shape of
horrendously expensive push and motor bikes.

BTW, there are some ladies who manage to make plain simple black
leathers scream out:"Look at me". :)

They actually make regular looking shorts with padded lycra attached
inside. And I have a few pairs. And they are uncomfortable as heck,
the way they stick and don't sit properly. For short distances,
regular shorts are more comfortable. As such, I haven't worn them in
years and should probably throw them out. Much better to go the real
    thing.
