    Hi,

A while ago I posted a job opening with my company on here - and filled the
position. I've got another one but what's consensus? Should job offers be
    posted here?

On the grounds that motorcyclists are less likely to turn up late having
    been stuck in traffic, yes.

    Okay,

Here's the text as I was going to put in the paper:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++
MGOM are a long established supplier of IT Hardware and Services. We are
looking to recruit a 'Sales/Marketing Administrator' based at our offices in
    Cardiff.

    The 'admin' duties will include:

a.. Taking telephone calls from customers
    b.. Telemarketing
    c.. Web Site Administration
d.. Keeping the diary for the Sales Staff
However, this is not purely an administration role. The company is looking
for a proactive individual who will work with the company, bringing their
own ideas, to promote the sales and growth of the company. The role may
suit a person with a background in Sales and/or marketing, or the Computer
    industry, or both.

MGOM are a small company and this appointment is key to future sales growth.
Accordingly, the position is offered with an attractive salary and an
    uncapped benefits package.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

Text that I shouldn't say for all sorts of reasons nowadays is that we are
looking for someone with a mature outlook - youngsters aren't excluded but
we need someone with a bit of life experience. We're flexible over working
time also - if you know someone who could do the job between 10 and 3 and
still have time to pick up their kids or whatever then that's fine by us. We
are looking for help here (you don't seem to be able to ask for that in job
adverts!) to get us on a marketing track. Salary will probably be in the
region of low teens basic and some sort of insentive scheme that should
equate to twentyish k's but uncapped - we don't mind rewarding success.

We're a traditional IT hardware/services company but are moving towards
being purely HP so a background with servers, blades, networking etc would
    be good but not essential.

Get in touch if you know of someone who may be interested. If nothing comes
of this it goes in the papers next week.

    Cheers

    Tim

The thing with job ads is that they need to be written in job advert speak.
What I actually want to say is:

"Is there anyone that can come and give me a hand to flog a load of gear to
other businesses? I don't know the best way of doing this, I'm hoping you
do. In return for you doing this, I'll give you a few quid."

IMHO not saying what you are prepared to pay is the first mistake as is
quoting a range like 12-35k DOE.

Engage brain, decide what you want to employ, make a common sense decision
on what the right salary is for the given company/marketplace, then
    advertise.

It sounds like you want someone who is a) good at B2B sales, and b) prepared
pitch in with a bit of office admin. Which is more important to your
business? Visualise the sort of person who would do well in role a), and
then the sort of person who would do well in role b). Do they look like the
    same person?

Exactly. Person a) will be well presented, well organised, strongly
focussed and a self-starter. Person b) will have some admin experience, a
slag-tag and an interest in clubbing, and may still be living with her mum.

Anyone who's any good at B2B sales will be looking for double the basic
plus a very attractive bonus scheme.

well, yes. I was being facetious. We pay interns less than that, but
    that's different.

We pay around £20/hour for 1st line tech support.

sure, and I have a 2nd line application support guy on £55/hour. Which
is not bad money for the role, especially given he's been on
approximately that rate for over 2 years now.

I've been asked to try and convince him to go permanent, but I doubt
he'd be happy with a ~60% pay cut...
