Naah, that was theirs actually, I was quite surprised by it (pleasantly
so).

There was actually minor snippage but nothing objectionable. They
deleted the aspersions about the AFR vs Daily Terror, and my Year 7
English teacher would be having conniptions about them inserting an
"and" in front the sentence starting "As a m-cyclist.." (I'd have been
doing lines for that grammatical faux pas). Deletion of "at AGSM" etc.

Simon's letter was a damn sight better than my own though, and I was
surprised they published it given the length - they must have had a
flood of emails to warrant setting that many column inches aside.

(now the conspiracy theory kicks in - did MCC of NSW set this up to get

You'll be pleased to know my young bloke (year 2) has been taught this at
school yet a fair few of the home reading programme books he brings home
are full of it, as he has great delight in pointing out, as well as
American spelling too. Go figure.

 

I am pleased to hear it, however I think it's only a matter of time
before the rules are changed "officially" into something quite different
to what they are now - English has always been the subject of constant
change and without a central authority (such as the French have) I
suspect that some of what we were always taught as ungrammatical is
going to become entrenched.

Thanks guys, lord only knows whether it made any difference or whether
as one of the cynics suggested no one will notice the letters should
make Mitchell check his facts a little more closely given the volume of
letters I think they must have got.
