Just watched Name of the Rose

  1. I know, it's old, but I quite enjoyed it.

It prompted me to investigate what the differences are between the
religions, so I've done a couple of hours research.

They are all without exception completely barmy.

I think I saw that back in 1990. Is that the one with fantastic helmets on
    the knights?

He does like to be verbose. I gave up on Focault's pendulum, something
that I've probably done in tolta less than ten times in my life.

  5. I'll second that. Name of the Rose I enjoyed the read. Focault's just
bogged me down. I got to the end but didn't enjoy the read as much as
other books of his. Trying to be too clever maybe?

Maybe. It was a while ago, and it's up to him IYSWIM.

  7. True, it was 1991 when I read it. Haven't tried to read it again.
Maybe worth a go as it had good critical acclaim, but that often means
that the review wankers want to have a good wank. I think he got the
nice balance of clever and entertainment with Name of the Rose though.
I usually read at the end of the day in bed and it's the last time I
want someone trying to bash what few neurons I have left. That said, I
do float between stuff like Pratchett then switch to Dawkins and the
like. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood at the time.

  8. I saw it by accident a few years back and found it quite good.
I'd avoided it before on priciple as being a shit religious film, but
    actually it was much more.

I don't really remember it being about religion at all. Sure, there
was some crap about church politics, but not about religion per se.

I quite enjoyed the film, but the book was better.

Many books that win awards have sold literally no copies - figures I saw
were usually in the hundreds, which is not what you'd expect at all.

But then the literary world is very, very secretive about its sales
    figures for some reason.

"Trying to be too clever" was exactly what I thought when I tried to
    read Foucault.

    Absolute wank.

  12. Really? So where do they get the numbers they publish in the Guardian
    every Saturday?

  14. Yeah - I don't think it was a religious film or book. It was set in a
religious environment, but I can't recall thinking "oh this is a
    religious film/book".

Yes. They made a point (or two) of it, and one anti-point, clearly.
