Damn! If only we were talking about heaters and not torches...

Makes me wonder why the Saab was at the top of the stairs.

All of mine were the best head torch I'd owned right up until the
battery terminals corroded and then they were shite.

They must have sorted out that issue by now because it was a well
known fault if you used them anywhere damp and didn't dry them out
thoroughly as soon as you got in. I'll add that when you consider
they're sold as an 'outdoor pursuits' piece of kit then they should be
able to withstand being thrown into a rucksack when piss wet through
yet a two week trip either caving or climbing mountains would normally
    ruin one.

Cool, so I was a Petzl test pilot.

They were always good bits of kit and did exactly what they were
supposed to do but it was that one fault that let them down.

I used to spray mine with WD40 on a regular basis but it was the trips
away that killed them. The headset was easy to seal with silicone but
the battery box was always a bastard because of the frequency with
which you had to open them.

The HID Ginlight takes my fancy, but I'm fucked if I'm paying that.
I have a notion to build something similar, handheld, using one of the
cheapy Chinese HID conversion lamps from ebay.

  7. Ah no; I bought LED headtorches from other sources and one lasts me
quite a while, so haven't even considered the Clulite offerings yet. As
you say, they are a bit clunky-looking, but I'd not be surprised if
    they're robustly designed.
I was referring more to the overall range of Green-Welly-Thrower torches
that Cluson do. Given that they started out with a big mofo farmers'
thing the size and weight of a shoebox full of Moggy Minor battery with
a Bantam headlamp and Man Inna Suitcase handle on it, you can guess
their target market is those of the muddy boot and sheepish nob
    persuasion, where reliability is important.
I have a couple of the smaller Cluson rechargeable handlamps and utterly
splendid they are - not only because they just work, but because I can
get spares for them locally when needed, via the farmers' store. Round
here a torch is a necessity, and what's on offer in the store is
    workmanlike.

  11. Bad form, blah.
    Actually, I'm attracted by an HL-9SO. I don't need a charger - got
    plenty of those and NiMHs.
