.....comes this news item from Japan:

"The Japanese military is readying 300 planes and 40 ships to assist
    the rescue operation"

It's already hit, not that that means it's completely over just yet.

"Waves at least 3ft (a metre) high were recorded on Oahu and Kauai"

That's all they need - a few flights of kamikazes should finish their
    evening off with a bang.

I hear on the radio that the UK is sending search and rescue crews to
Japan, to assist. That's jolly nice of us - we must have some left,
then. Would have thought they'd be superfluous in Japan, though -
they're about as clued up as you can get over there.

we've got colleagues in Tokyo staying in the office as there's no
transport home. One of which is 7 months pregnant (having lost the
    previous one).

the company is providing beds, food, drinks for all there.

fingers crossed for all over there.

One would assume the early warning sites would pay attention this
    time.
Just spoke with a friend who is there with his lady. They were woken 3
times in the night by alarms, but they live up the mountain so no
problem. Several other friends are there for a surf contest, so they
are renting a house on the North Shore. They were evacuated and spent
the night sleeping in cars. Some damage to boats in harbors, some
homes were damaged, but since Hawaii has been hit hard in the past,
people take it seriously and are fairly prepared.
OTOH, when it strikes near, as in Christchurch in NZ, and Japan, there
isn't much you can do but keep dancing and stay out of the way of
    flying debris.

  11. By no means is it over. Folks all over the pacific are probably panic
buying all the radiation suits they can get their hands on.

Oh come now, if we can't get a laugh by turning everything in life into
a reference to the second world war, what CAN we do?

    Oh, right.

    Gotcha.

They will be now even if they weren't yesterday. That was one hell of

    Some interesting pix there:

#12 - Strange how the energy dispersion is focused on Chile.
#17 - The outside left (on the right side) is definitely surfable, but
you'd never be in position to catch it. It's a half mile outside of
any normal wave and in a place no one would ever consider surfing.
#36 - a fault line down the middle of the road? It'd be fun to ride.
