Sounds like your R65 needs new tyres and/or steering-head bearings.

Gary (wheel bearings? rear dampers? the subframe tightened?)

    Blinker fluid?

A number of R65's were fitted with aftermarket anti-vibration engine mount
kits, these can cause poor handling as can poorly torqued engine mounts,
worn or poorly torqued swingarm bearings, wheel bearings, wrong choice of
tyres, wrong tyre pressure, etc, a fix can be had by a major service
starting from front to back addressing all bolt torques, suspension wear,
    etc.

Although I wonder why anyone would bother, the R65 is really a very poor
    cousin to a R80 or R100 series.

    You think?

I'd kinda like to still have my old R65. More nimble, more practical
around town, and set up correctly they can handle quite well.

Personally I prefer my R100GSPD around town, the 21 inch front wheel is
perfect for potholed streets, the high riding position gives good visibility
and the extra grunt gets me away from the lights faster.

.... note I said "without cause". Eg: His R65 ain't inherently
    wobbly, it's just abused.
I've heard a lot of people raving about them, but they're usually
drooling (even more than is usual for BMW owners).

Perhaps you haven't owned one. A sprightly, nimble R65 is a delight after my
Queen Mary-like RS: easy to ride, easy to own, easy to maintain, high grin
factor. And several other people here have said similar.

I tell you what... I could be moving up your way in the new year, how about
you borrow my R65 for a week or two. If you don't like it, I'll... I'll...
    buy another!

Y'know; I've always thought R65s were shit too Gary... even shitter than
Boxer said. [holds out hand hopefully]

Yeah, I hate 'em even worse that that!

An R1200GS would suck even more so, just for future reference.

I have riden a few but never owned one, the girls that owned them were very
    happy with them.

For me it was a T140V, mechanically it was a heap of shit, but loved
it to death, quite literally (or maybe it was my maintenance...)
