In SA they were nabbing motorcycles for not riding in the gutter, and
after a couple of court cases I think they either exempted motorcycles
or changed the definition of "practicable".

perzacily.....in Sydney, driving a HV, its the only place to
be.....on parts of the Cumberland Hwy, you`re liable to smack a tree, or
pole, if you hit bump, in the left lane..and on parts of the Horsley
Drive, where it`s 4 lane, regardless of legality, if you drove in the
left lane, with high load/body, yer asking for trouble....so for all
your reasons plus a couple, left is not always best.....politics
    excepted of course..:^))

Replace 'a truck' with 'anyone' and you've hit the nail on the head.

    Cheers,

Yep. Had one just today. He's doing 85-90 for the few minutes I'm
following him. Then, not just a broken centre line, but a whole extra
overtaking lane appears. By the time I'm beside him we're both doing
    120, and I can't do anymore since I'm towing a trailer and we're on a
    hill now.

So cock breath gets to keep the lead and drops back to around 90
again. A few minutes later and it's on again, but no hill this time. I
had to do 140 to get ahead of him, at which point he dramatically
slowed down. Probably the female in the passenger seat looked at the
speedo and reminded him about the contract involving his balls and her
    purse.

  8. The interest there is that if the matter wasn't contested at court, the
piggies would still be harassing the BigHeads with it to this day.

I reckon every notice even remotely 'sus' should be tested at court until
the piggies play according to the rules.
Natch, GovCo will then change the rules, but in forcing that matter so it
will cause the community to eventually get the message about the
    *Massive_Breach_Of_Trust* Scam bu GovCo.
Yeah, I know, Dumb and Dumber probably won't notice. And not D&D are in
    fact the majority.....

I think garden-variety T-Junctions would be safer than some
of the freeway entries on south and west sides of brissy.
    There's a couple I've come across (sorry I don't drive in
brissy enough to tell you which ones), where the calais is
hard pressed to get to 80 by the time you need to merge with
    the traffic doing 100+. The Calais ain't a slow car - I'd
hate to be trying the same in a truck, you'd be hard pressed
to be doing 50 I reckon.
Another glitch I've encountered is where you are joining the
freeway from a curved, lower ramp, and you can't see what's
going on on the freeway until you are pretty much right at
the merge - plant the foot to get up to 100, and then you
see that the freeway is banked up.
Staying in the left-most lanes would be fine if the entries
and exits were properly designed, and if they gave a bit
    more warning for lanes ending.

  11. And yet I have just returned from Shitney and no-one apart from me, it
seems, has any inkling about staying in the left unless overtaking.
I even had some dumb as **** 'lux driver in front of me who immediately
pulled into the right lane as soon as it appeared, the pity was that he
didn't have wither the power or intention of overtaking the semi that was in
front of him, he just wanted to be a dead ****. I eventually passed him by
shooting up the inside as soon as he made his signature move at the next
overtaking area. I wish I was in my old Laser as I wouldn't have been
adverse to giving him a gentle love tap to let him know to get out of the
way, though the poor old laser might not have enough guts to make it a quick
    getaway :)

  12. Germany and Spain were the best for keeping out of the fast lanes for my
mind, I had an old Italian drum into me the mantra that they live by, "get
out of the fast lane as you are NEVER the fastest car on the road" and
having been overtaken like I was standing still at 160 kph, by every
imaginable make and model, I soon came to appreciate the truth in it :)

Not read... I was there :)

In that I was active in the MRA at the time. I recall the court
cases, I recall the protests and so on.

I just can't remember if it was a law change or a bunch of precedents
where the cops agreed that "practicable" for a motorcycle was
    different to a car.

But I do recall the kerfuffle.

It's defiantly not a QLD only thing
having traveled to both NSW and VIC I can say it's the same in all three
    states

    and one reason is Ego/pride
some people have the idea that other drivers will think less of them as
a driver if they travel in the left lane, imagine if a truck should get past
OH NO we couldn't have that
what would other drivers think(always amusing to watch them speeding up
and slowing down, fucks with their brains, they don't want to do 103kph
but they don't want that truck to get past either, you can almost see
them freaking out, great entertainment on the long boring drives)

I drive the 20 klms of new 3 lane Bruce Highway from Burpengary to Bald
    Hills to and from work
I sit in the far left lane and can for the most part travel at 100-110kph

I see cars enter the highway and as soon as they can they jump into the
middle lane, even if they are the only vehicle on that section of
roadway, some even go right across to the far right lane which is good
because I don't have to change lanes for them

I should get a few pics or vids of it
you have a long bunched up stream of traffic in the middle lane all
doing 90-95(brake lights every 10 seconds as they all tailgate), a bit
shorter stream in the right lane doing 95-100(again brake lights and
tailgating) and then the left lane will have one or two cars and a
couple of trucks all doing 100-110 evenly spaced and cruising comfortably

the only problem is when you come across the odd person in the left lane
doing 80-90, usually have to change across 2 lanes to get past because
some dick will be in the middle lane keeping pace with the car in the
left lane then it's back to the left lane and hit the resume button

fucking weird is what it is

I suggest showing him the Melbourne Burnley tunnel footage put out by
one of the current affairs programs not long after the big accident
earlier this year. Clearly shows examples where accidents would have
been avoided through proper lane discipline. Similarly, point out the
statistics on fatalities on the Western Ring Road: There's a thread
here somewhere last year (IIRC) pointing out that none of the 7
fatalities were speed related, and those that weren't crossovers (now
fixed by installation of wire rope barriers) were pedestrian deaths or
hitting stationary vehicles - both lane discipline issues (at least
one of the pedestrian deaths was people ducking into the emergency
stop lane to get around traffic snarls and hitting)

    Cheers,
    Steve
