No idea if they are good or not but found these on ebay, saves modding
the bike or having wires dangling etc:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8725812548&fromMakeTrack=true

Probably need to be used with waterproof outer as well on a bike, not
sure about that 6 month warranty bollocks either. Would work well if
used with heated grips, keeps back of hand warm as well as burning the
    palms

    All the best

You lot are tough you are, what with wearing those Kilts in the middle
of winter. I mean who'd miss the gloves.

How about a 3 door hatchback, then?

Seriously, many years ago I used to commute in all weathers, then I
bought a car and wondered why I hadn't done so earlier.

Weather like this isn't for bikes.

I'd prefer to be sat in a warm car listening to the radio, even if it
means sitting in a bit of traffic, rather than freezing my nads off
trying to keep a bike upright.

I had one too many slide down the road to bother with winter riding
    anymore.

There's a huge difference between bimbling round the inner city, as you
Londoners do, and a 30+ mile commute in sub zero temperatures.

When I did it, I could regularly peel a sheet of ice from the front of
my jacket when I arrived at work.

You could always get some motorcycle muffs to warm your hands up with:

That did pass through my mind, I'll let you know how binning goes with
hands in muffs when I have an update.

The ends of the muffs look quote large so you've just got your hands
in them, they're not wrapped around your hands, afaics.

SWK will be along shortly to correct me.

I used muffs for a few years, coming off several times, my hands never
got 'stuck' in them. Worst thing about the muffs I tried was that they'd
drag on the brake and clutch levers at speeds of 60mph upwards. I solved
that by sticking some plastic in them, cut from old oil containers.

  15. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Beav amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
    It won't happen.

    Getting stuck, that is.

Except for a few skilled (or very optimistic) riders, most
of us go into hibernation for at least a few months (in the
south) or half the year (the extreme north).
Now this is beside the point, I guess, because there is
still a part of the bike season that is bloody cold. And we
have exactly the same problems and solutions. Fairing,
heated grips and thick gloves seems to be the preferred
kit for those that are not fair weather bikers but not
    extremists.
Myself, I don't do that many miles in winter conditions
and go unplugged like you'd like to do. On my trail bikes
I've had hand protectors and they really help, especially
    in cold rain.

Crash protection is very variable with the snowmobile
mittens (or gloves). Some have real leather in all the right
places and real thick textile elsewhere. Some are "flimsy"
to put it nicely. If you ever fell (even when skiing) into
coarse, hard, melted and refrozen snow with bare hands
you wonder how anyone would buy the thin mittens.

Not that it will be much use to you but I'd like to mention
Hestra gloves. They seem to do a lot of gloves for alpine
skiing but their biking (and snowmobile, I guess) gloves
and mittens are as good as their prices are high.

I don't need to prove how 'hard' I am by riding when I can be driving a
warm, comfortable and relatively safe car.
