km/h speedometer

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by david.cawkwell, Mar 18, 2005.

  1. Hi Group,

    I have a new imported motorcycle which I want to register with the
    DVLA. I have a EC certificate of conformity for the bike.
    I haven't tried to register it yet with the DVLA.

    Is it still ok to register here?

    Or do I have to get the speedometer converted to use it on the UK
    roads?

    Thanks for any advice.

    I can tell you that on my bike the conversion from MPH to KPH is as simple
    as holding down a button for about 10 seconds.

    That will be a bugger at 80 on the autoroutes.

    My FZR250RR is an import, and that's got a km/h speedo.

    I can tell you that on my bike the conversion from MPH to KPH is as
    I think I might do it on the ferry as I crossed.

    Reminiscent of sweller swapping his bar-end mirror from the right to the
    left bar while we were on the chunnel going over last year.

    Did you have to prove to the DVLA that you know your 6 and 10 times tables.

    Imagine, if you will: Mo whisking down the autoroute at a goodly rate
    of knots: "Gosh" thinks Mo, "I wonder how fast I'm going in les
    kleeks, rather than the indicated jolly old emmpeeaitch".

    Fortunately for the inquisitive Mo, there's a little black button (on
    a black background (but it doesn't light up)) that will enable such an
    answer to be yielded, even on the fly, so to speak.

    So, the curious Mo releases the left bar, snakes his begloved hand
    over the yoke, under the fairing stay and presses the vital tit.
    "One", he counts in his big, slow head, "Two, three ..." all the while
    watching the clocks awaiting the magic figure to appear in LCD glory.

    "I do wonder what happened", thinks the now slow Mo, lying flat on his
    back in the big white van with the comfy bed in the back ... "Oh yes,
    there was a bend - and I caught my glove on the fairing stay and I
    couldn't steer and I couldn't balance and then it all went sky ground
    sky ground ... this must be an ambulance then ..."

    Does that answer your question?

    A very rough KPH > MPH is divide by 10 and times by 6 ... it's the one I
    always used on my CBR4, anyway.

    I couldn't be having with all that malarkey. I would be needing to get
    off every half mile and work it out to the nth degree on a calculator.
    Sticky backed plastic and a felt pen is the only answer.

    You don't need to do that all the time if you remember that....

    30kmh = 20mph,
    50kmh = 30mph,
    65kmh = 40mph (or half way between 50kmh and 80kmh) :)
    80kmh = 50mph,
    100kmh = 60mph, (easy one to remember)
    115kmh = 70mph.

    Or just have a GPS reading out speeds in mph when you're 'on tour'.

  18. Divide by 8 and multiply by 5 is just as easy and a damn sight more
    accurate.

  19. What do I need to change about the headlight?
    I thought most headlights on motorbikes where straight ahead.
    With no adjustment for dip.

    So could someone explain how so many bikes have got onto the UK roads
    with km/h speedometers on if you can't register this one?

    if they where made for right hand drive roads the dip is to the kerb
    side, which in a left hand drive county means its into the on oncoming
    traffic. Thats why you have to put them stickers on your lights when
    you take a car or bike to France from here.

    If the speedo has Km and Miles then it's ok if not change it
