....and bike. Slow speed, sudden stop and the Pirelli Scorpion went skating. I was surprised how easily the tyre lost its bite. Is this a characteristic of Scorpions (they are about 6 years old)? If so, then what would be a better choice of tyre. I don't do lots of miles though I would have appreciated 150 or so last weekend. -- R100RT Aprilia Pegaso 650 IE "The Flying Mythos" Formerly: James Captain, A10, C15, B25, Dnepr M16 solo, R80/7, R100RT (green!) www.davidhowardjeweller.co.uk
Scorpions aren't the most favoured tyre amongst R-GS owners. Verdi used to use them on his Tiger and thought they were okay. More likely a combination of ham fistedness, poor road surface and aged tyre rubber colluding to stick you on your arse. I put a set of Conti Road Attacks[1] on the R-GS in 2008 to go to the Alps. fitted a new rear in 2009 to go to the Alps again. They were great for those trips; saw 3 months of autumn/winter commuting to Cardiff where they were again great; had a rest as my current "work" is within walking distance and were lovely last weekend. Front has done nearly 10k; 1st rear replaced early at 5.5k; 2nd rear on 5k and will last another 1k or more. If I go touring again this summer then I will stick another pair on as they have been the best tyre I've used on the R-GS so far. If you want a semi-off road style tyre, like the Scorpion, then try Avon Distanzias. If you want an off-road tyre that won't be torn to shreds on the road then get Conti TKC80 [1] http://www.conti-bike.co.uk/default.asp?spid=3 IIRC you liked the looks and would consider making a ring to match

That's the sort of info I need, thanks. I'll not be needing off-road stuff. See the first model on the opening page of my website, No12. -- R100RT Aprilia Pegaso 650 IE "The Flying Mythos" Formerly: James Captain, A10, C15, B25, Dnepr M16 solo, R80/7, R100RT (green!) www.davidhowardjeweller.co.uk
