This 'up on crutches' bit, is that a euphemism?

Ha, I severed my femoral artery using the wing of a rusty Renault when
I was 18 and I lived to tell the tale. I suppose I was lucky really
because my bike careered off up the road and smashed through the dwarf
wall of someones garden and he just happened to be a trained first
aider who'd nicked loads of supplies from where he worked. The bloke
did an outstanding job by throwing loads of wadding into the massive
hole in my left leg then putting a duvet over me to keep me warm and
making me take fluids until the ambulance arrived.

The high point of the whole episode was knowing that plod shut the
road in both directions and all the locals (1) thought I was dead
until I returned to terrorise (2) them again.

    (1) About 50 yards from my parents house.
    (2) Apparently my antics on motorbikes upset them sometimes.

Mine have been in since 1981 and they are not ever fucking coming out.
I hear the removal is more painful than the break after this amount of
    time.

    uh huh.
My figleaf of rationalisation is that I don't race any more.

Not sure how to classify track days, mind.

Down the middle. Outside the bone is full of muscles, tendons, etc.

  11. Pa lost his leg due to an angry Hun with a machine-gun, and one of the
two bullets that hit his thigh severed the femoral artery.

And the two severed ends of the artery just nipped up, and closed the
    wound.

It took 24 hours to get him to a casualty clearing station (which
couldn't have been a fun wait) and when they started operating on the
wounds, the artery opened up and sprayed blood everywhere, but as he was
    in good hands, he lived.

Nobody could ever explain just how the artery behaved as it did.

  14. Nah, just an unknown lurker. A wannabe, who had a bike a long time
ago. I promised myself another one, when I'd paid off my mortgage and
when my son was old enough to maybe ride. Ha!
Aha, ouch and commiserations! I had my right shin sewed up after a
skiing crash in Austria, in the '70's. I fainted! Not up to your
    standards.
I only have a scar. Seriously, get well soon.

You'll just be taking it easy, won't you? Tootling round at your own
pace, minding your own business, not a care in the world... look at the
line that idiot's taking, thinks he's bloody Rossi or something, well,
I'll show him, I'll just outbrake him into this corner and stuff it up

Hi Pa was injured in WWII - surely he'd already spawned TOG long
    before that.

  19. Am I being thick? They put the big rod thing in through the broken bone
but how do they get it out? Depending on the leg bone in question it's
got a knee on one end and a foot or a hip on the other - which direction
does the rod come out in?

    No bloody wonder it hurts.
