I did my ankle about 13 years ago and they put on on the outside, but
    I guess ankles are different.

I've still got it in a bag somewhere. I asked if I could keep it when
    they took it off.

Mine was in my tibia. They get it out by bending the leg to open up the
knee joint, then attaching a slide hammer to pull it out. Eventually.
Mine's just a red line down the front of my knee.
Mine hurt after the nail had been removed, but that was because my knee
had been done up with staples so it looked like it had a zip fitted,
which pulled everything tight, especially when I tried to bend it.

Seems to be fine now though.

heh. When they replaced my nail as part of the bone graft, back in
Sept, it apparently took 90 mins to get the old nail out. They used a
    slide hammer too.
Me too - I went climbing again for the first time last night! I was
struggling on 5s (whereas I used to struggle on 6s), and was puffing
like a steam train after each route, but at least I could do it. Very
    pleased.

Apparently, the problem with mine was that it had been left in for
longer than it should have been; it was only taken out after I'd
mentioned it as a result of landing on my knees after coming off the
GPz550. The bone had grown over the top of the nail, where there's a
threaded section for attaching the slide hammer, so there was much
hammer and chisel action before they could attach the hammer.
    Fantastic!

I haven't been climbing for *ages*. My normal climbing partner thinks he
might be stout, so is a bit reluctant at the moment...

    <wince>

Mine was a problem because I'd been putting more weight on it than I
should (more than zero, then...), and it was a bit bent...
    That's what I thought!
Y'know, I was thinking about you guys when at the wall last night, and
the thought "I knew AndyR when he was skinny" popped into my head.

Skinny? I don't think I've ever known him be actually skinny, but
relatively speaking, you might be right.

Get some exercise you fat fucker.

I've been goading Mr Champion with regards to the Alps trip later this
summer because I think we need to do a day on some via ferrata. He's
not declined the invitation yet but he hasn't confirmed his intention
to get a bit of adrenaline running through his veins.

I had rather hoped I get some adrenline running by riding the
    motorbike.

The lad is a bit disconsolate at only coming 12th in his age group at
the BMC national finals at Westway on Saturday. He was lying 8th for
most of the day, but then says his "foot slipped" towards the top of a
7A (top roped, not leading). Unfortunately 4 of the lads he was beating
managed to top that one. Even the winner couldn't do the last 7B route,
but the lad got as far up it as everyone but the top three. So he is a
bit miffed, because he moves up to the oldest youth group next year and
may have missed his best chance to qualify to train with the British
    Team.

He's still learning so it's all good experience and being with the
older group will encourage him to push himself a bit harder than he
might have done if he'd stayed where he is.

Just keep reminding him that he's already doing really well and the
more climbing he does the better he'll get.

  11. Get him SCUBA diving.
    Loads of exercise.
    Loads of adrenaline.
Less impact damage. That is if you disregard the ride out to a wreck on
    a RIB.

    I'd even Buddy him.

I have told him that from what I saw at the youth lead trials in
December that he is better at leading routes than most lads of his age.
Routes are all done as lead climbs in the oldest group, and he will have
had a lot more experience of it than some of the others that go up with
    him.
I pointed out that he not only improved his ranking from last year, but
also did better than the best Midlands climber in that group last year.

He is at Wolf Mountain right now.

  14. The diving I do with my misses is that sort. Apart form one drift dive
in the Red Sea, straights of Tiran, that was aborted by the dive leader
when the current went from about one knot to twelve in about ten
    seconds.
    *Very* interesting.
North Sea Wreck diving is a lot of fun.

And I bet the adrenaline would pump some while he was learning. I've
seen the whites around the major adrenaline junkies eyes, as students on
their first open water dives. I don't think Champs done it before.

A mate is consider upgrading some kit, so I weighed my twinset so that
he could work out courier fees. 47Kg without regs, you're getting some
    exercise there.

IMO it's not an adrenaline sport unless it goes wrong. It's odd in
that it's quite possible to have done something so stupid that is
going to hurt (a lot) or kill you but not for several more minutes.
I had a wide eyed buddy earlier this year basically because of their
mental state and it wasn't any fun for them or for me who had to get
    them to the surface.

Me? Hah! I reckon I'm currently the fittest (generally) I've ever been.
Still not as skinny as you, though.

  17. Same as riding a motorbike on a straight road.
