    HP/Compaq NC6000

    arse, arse, *ARSE*.

This is my second one, both failed the same way. Dead mobo.

If anyone offers you a cheap one, politely decline, seems to be a common
    fault.

    Anyone got a cheap one?

At work we have IBM/Lenovos, that are tough beasts, but some fail
because they are carried open by pinching (4 fingers under, thumb above
near the touchpad). This bends slightly the whole machine, including the
mobo that eventually develops cracks in the solder or copper lanes.

The NC6000 failures seem to be heat related. Often just after the
warranty has expired of course. New mobo seems to be the only option.
It's a pity 'cos that laptop suits me just find and I -really- don't
want to spend another week installing all of the various toys I have on it.

A disk imaging utility and a good USB disk are your friends.

I've got a Dell 8600c surplus to requirements.

    1.7 Pentium M
    1Gb RAM
    80Gb HD
    15.4 1680x1050 screen
    4x DVD+RW
    Intel b/g wireless
    Internal bluetooth

Excellent nick, only been used as a desktop machine

    Looking for around 300 notes?

What I was really hoping for was another nc6000 so I could just swap the
disk out. Job done. However, I'm only buying a bit more time if I do
that since all nc6000's seem to die the same way. I could be interested
    - whereabouts are you?

    South Birmingham.

The machine needs wiping but that's easily done. I'm in no rush to
    get rid of it either.

    <looks at new work laptop>

Is that nc6000 specific, or does it affect other 6k models? The 6400 in
    particular...

Had a work one for about three years now with no problems... well, it
did have a new motherboard[1] at one point, now that you mention it,
and one time the graphic adapter went, and the hard disk's also been
replaced at least twice... but apart from that it's been completely
    trouble-free for the whole period.

[1] Well, a complete new machine, in fact, bar the hard disk which was
    switched over.

Nah, that wasn't half as bad. Even when I sold it to Timo it still had
the original frame (minus most of its powder coating, to be fair) and
most of the same engine and gearbox... and the original exhaust, come
to that, after the carbon one disintegrated...
