Current laptop appears to be dying a slow death so it looks like time for
a replacement, that and I just want a new one.

This one is a Dell which I've been more than happy with over the last four
    years.

Uses? The usual, email, internet etc but I'd also like it to be quite
capable of running photoshop (or similar) and do occasional video editing
    stuff.

I've got up to £500 to spend.

I'm a fan of Dell - never had any issues. My Inspiron 15 is pretty good.

I'd go to the Dell site and pick the best specced laptop for £500, e.g.
    http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/hom...=ukdhs1&~oid=uk~en~20211~ft_anav_n00n5051lp~~

(needs 1GB extra RAM to match Ginge's spec).

    And a 64-bit OS, obviously.

FWIW PCPro go with (for that price) Dell Inspiron M101z £499 before the
    VAT increase.

Currently I'd say Thinkpad i5 64 bit. They rock.

Im really happy with my hp Pavillion and you can get some good deals
online. I saved about £100 by shopping around...

The lad got a 15 inch screen Samsung for combined birthday and Xmas
present. Only W7 32bit but it seems pretty good. It's more 'powerful'
than my main desktop (Sony Vaio PCV-RZ504) at least. About 300 quid
online from the co-op. Came with HDMI ouput and evryfink.

Looks as if it will do the job, though I'd like a bit more battery life.

Showing my complete out-of-touchness with the world of Gates, will the 32-
bit Win7 supplied 'see' and use all four of those Gigabytes of RAM?
