    Who?

My old steam driven Compaq Armada E500 (stop sniggering at the back)
refuses to boot up. I use it down in the garage when I need an online
manual, or to read a cd one. I know it needs a battery, but it used to
work fine off the mains charger until it stopped booting up.

It's meant to boot in Win XP Pro. it gets as far as the screen with the
flag and scrolling horizontal bar, then goes to a backlit plain dark
screen. At this point the innards start making frog type noises and it
jkust hangs there for a couple of minutes before shutting down and
starting again. When you first fire it up it defaults to a screen
telling me to choose the mode to start, i.e 'Safe mode' etc. If I pick
either dsafe mode it scrolls a load of code lines and hangs then starts
frog noises. if I pick last known config or start in windows it does
    the flag screen bit.

Ah yes, I remember now - but this thing is ancient, I wonder if he'll
    touch it.

Sounds like the hard drive is shagged, or the OS is corrupt. Try a
reinstall, followed by a new hard drive.

OK so it POSTs OK and only collapses when it tries to load WinXP Pro. If
you have another computer that works I would suggest d/l'ing a 'live CD '
of any linux distro. I'd use www.linuxmint.com, but then I would,
wouldn't I. PCPro recently had an ISO of SuSE on its cover CD. It really
doesn't matter which distro you choose, Puppy linux is a nice small one.
Boot from the live CD and see if the rest of the laptop is working. If so
it's either a corrupt Windows (re-install) or possibly a shagged hard
disk (the live CD should have the tools to test this). Take appropriate
action. If you don't have the facilities to d/l a distro I will happily
burn and send you a CD if you send me a snail-mail addy. Genuine offer,
    no strings attached.

I can always have a look.
If it's a hard drive, then shouldn't be too difficult, if it's the
controller or other motherboard problem it probably won't be worth playing
    with.
Is there any data on it that you "must have" and haven't got backed up?
Fixing ancient pooters, (DEC stuff springs to mind!) & modern stuff, is what
    we do.
email addy works if cleared and you should have my mobbly in your archive
    someplace.
    I owe you a favour anyway ;o)

Cool, gissa job. I can do that.

I'm probably one of the few on here that has played with a DEBNA,
    KFQSA or a QBus MIcroVAX

    Apart from Auvache of course.

Sounds like the disk has died.
Replace disk and reinstall, recover from the backups that you carefully
    preserved.

There's bugger all of any interest on it, totally blank as far as I'm
aware. I'll arrange a time and place to meet via email.

    Cheers

Perhaps it's overheating - try blowing through the vent holes with a
    can of air.

That it makes it very easy then.
I'll try an install of XP Pro, that'll show up any disc weaknesses, I can
sort a disk if needed after that.
Let me know when, where, how & what at your convenience.

That could be the case, as the little fans so cause the heatsinks of lapdog
    to block up solidly.
But it normally takes a little longer than initial boot to overheat and
    shutdown.
Symptoms don't seem quite right for overheat though.

  17. had the same problem on my acer , had to have the hard drive changed
because there was a faulty sector on it .

just change the hard drive reinstall windows and you should be ok

keep your old hard drive , for a £10.00 you can get g tech enclosures
, stick your old hard drive in that and you should be able to retrieve
most of the infomation on it

If its got 2 DIMMS, try swapping them over.. it looks like there may be a
duff block of memory if nothing else has changed. Either that or the disk
    may be going tits up.
