Larceny of helmets?

Eating in a roadside café yesterday, observing how many riders carried their
    helmets everywhere.

Useful at identifying a fellow traveler, but became curious at whether
helmet theft is a justified fear or is carrying your head on your arm just
something we and Anne Boleyn do out of habit?

Anyone had a helmet nicked off a parked bike?

best, Andrew (who is experimenting on the topic with a much used, unloved
and slightly scraped jaw lifter - not much of prize really)

  2. In all my years of riding, I have always left my helmet on the bike and
    never had one pinched

Although when I went to a partly one night in St. Kilda, I did misplace my
    helmet for a short time
found it on the head of a local feral on his pushie, he had a closer than
expected experience of wearing a helmet

Never lug my hemet around. Always leave it on the bike. Never buy a
top-of -the-range hemet. In fact, I only ever buy one in the bottom
20% of the price range. Never had one nicked in 38 years of
    motorcycling.

I tend to carry mine only when I think there's a risk of rain.

  5. I place mine the right way down for that reason
nothing worse than coming out and finding 2 litres of rain water resting
    peacfully in you helmet

I generally take my hat with me, with the gloves in it. Call me
untrusting but I won't leave it unattended with the bike - 'til I get
something I can lock it into whilst parked, anyway..

In my two years of having a bike I've not had a hat nicked yet, and I
don't intend on being the first person to post in here about having had
one stolen so I take care of it and take it with me.

Well... It only needs to happen once, to you. Then you can't ride
the damn bike home because it will be your luck to get spotted.

I don't leave the lid on the bike because leaving it without locking
it is asking for some 13yo idiot to make himself a man by taking it
and throwing it down the road. No, I don't trust kids who hang about
shopping centres and carparks, why do you ask?

Locking it up is usually too much like work. I have to excavate
enough room in the topbox for it, and the cable helmet lock on the
    bike's too hard as well.

Plus it's difficult to store it so that it won't get rained on, shat
on by birds (the bastards aim you know) or pissed in by drunks.
Putting it on the mirror so it gets the polystyrene compressed isn't
    something I want to do.

A mate of mine had the strap to his helmet cut and the helmet stolen.

The grubs out there now don't want to steal it to use it, or because
they haven't got one, they steal it because they can.

I take the full face with me (Shoei XR-1000) but I leave the skullcap on
    the bike seat.

I challenged a pair of young blokes at Belconnen Mall one night last year.
They were in a stationwagon, and they took a Shoei helmet off one of the
    bikes in the bike park.

I said "Oy, what do you think you're doing?" (yeah, big brave betty), and
the one with the helmet in his hand said "My bike's broken down - didn't
want to leave the helmet on it overnight" - which sounded reasonable, and
besides, what else was I going to do? I took down their rego number and
watched the local bike forums just in case, but nthere was no mention of a
stolen helmet. I'm doing the Pollyanna thing and thinking the best of them
when I can bear to think of them at all. Of COURSE they were telling the
    truth...right?

I always take my helmet with me when I'm off the bike, by the way...

I hadn't thought of that one - thanks George. If it ever happened to
you, there'd be a spare in the shed anyway, so it would be no issue for
    you at all. :)

It would have been even cheaper to use 2 tin cans and some string. I get
the feeling functionality had something to do with it :)

  19. I find it depends where I am. Normally I take it with me, but if I
know it's going to a pain to carry around and I'm not in an area known
for crime, I will leave it.

Couple of years back I had friend of mine come for a ride. She's a
pretty vain young thing and I insisted she put some solid shoes/boots
on if she was coming for a ride. We stuck some pretty dress shoes
under the seat of the busa. When we got back from the ride we went to
a pub in Salamanca. She was quite happy to leave the boots sitting
next to the bike so she could change into the more trendy shoes. I
made her drag the helmet along though. The boots weren't mine, but the
helmet was. Boots were still there when we got back.
