Larceny of helmets?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Andrew Price, Dec 28, 2008.

  1. What would be your definition of an area "known for crime"?
Statistics prove that any area is an area for crime, different area,
    different crime

You may live in Trak or Snives and still lose your helmet or boots, yet in
Collingwood, East Sydney or the Valley, they might leave you alone

Probably because they thought they might have contained a fierce Guard
    Spider ?

Perfect place to hide them, he wasn't looking for the helmets.

Lessee - a mate of my dad's had his pissed in outside the pub (nobody
would own up unsurprisingly - he'd have killed them). I've personally
seen inattentive shoppers bump a helmet of a handlebar onto the ground
and put it back - there's your safety compromised and you'll never
    know...

Sure, if you buy a cheapshit helmet it's only a 13yr boy with a bad
attitude who's going to knock it off, but $700-1000 helmets are a bit
more likely to be swiped by someone on spec of being able to sell it
in a pub. Probably not an issue in a country town, but def one for
    city dwellers

I always carry mine for similar reasons to the above - why trust that
complete strangers or animals won't do something that's supposed to
    keep you alive ?

It's much more of an issue if you have a large scone like mine , the
cost of replacement is horrible so I carry /

I own a $450 nolan which I regularly leave on the handlebars for up to
10 minutes at a time. I'm a courier and wearing a helmet into office
buildings is frowned upon and you generally need both hands to manage
a delivery so I and most couriers I know just leave them on the
handlebars. I do not have firsthand reports of anyone losing a helmet
in this fashion, but I do have 1 2nd hand report of a helmet theft and
another 2nd hand report of dog feces being left in someones helmet
(who put the helmet on immediately upon returning to the bike)

The series is available for download along with a comic reader
somewhere. I'm a bit hazy on where I found it...

  12. I Melbourne or Sydney I never left my helmet.

Here in Hobart I'd leave my helmet in Salamanca during the day but not
at night. During the day on a weekend there are lots of bikes around
and I was pretty sure that other bikers seeing someone's helmet being
nicked would put a stop to it. Whether it is true or not, dunno. But
never had one nicked. And in reverse if I saw someone tampering with
someone else's bike, I'd have words with them.

Why didn't you take the rego of the car and the rego of the bike to the
local plods, explain what you saw to them, and then let them sort out
whether or not he was telling the truth using their resources, or you
could have left the rego of the car on the bike with a note explaining
what you saw for the rider. Reading forums for someone having a whinge
about something is a very hit and miss approach... and what are "local
forums" in the context of a worldwide internet?

  15. Yes, but only if you knew the bike and the rider of that bike,
If you were just passing by, you wouldn't give a second thought of who was
    touching the helmet
Could be the owner taking it inside like you do.

Gee, let me see, why didn't I do any of that? Night time, lone female, and
strangely enough I don't usually carry pen and paper with me when I go to
the mall. Oh what a bad citizen I am for simply challenging two blokes and
then believing what they said and then not following through to the nth
degree by running to the cop shop or trying to find someone with a pen and
paper so I can write an essay for the owner, assuming the bloke was telling
    porkies...

Sorry Nev, you may be the Caped Crusader - but there's a limit to what I'm
prepared to do for someone who was patently silly enough to leave an
expensive lid unsecured on a bike in a shopping centre car park after dark.
From my point of view, challenging two blokes was risky enough - and funnily
enough, I was quite shaky after having done so. Mea fucking culpa...

As for taking time out to go and report the incident to the cops - are you
kidding me? They only bother with major crimes... reporting my car stolen to
the cops several years ago, and even handing them evidence of the bastards
who nicked it didn't help me get my car back several years ago - you reckon
the cops are going to bend over backwards for a helmet?

Oh, and the local forum I'm talking of is the MRAACT e-group - which,
funnily enough, is "local" to the ACT - we get a lot of emails about stolen
    bikes/gear.

It's easy to pontificate in the middle of the day about what a lone female
rider "should" have done in those circumstances, but I'd suggest in this
case you might be talking out of your arse just so you can live up to your
    GYAFW moniker.
