Laughable would-be bike/car drags

It never ceases to amaze me how many people in cars try to take bikes on.
Always makes me smile under the helmet and I rarely get pulled into a
contest. Would be like facing a 4 yr old girl in a boxing match half the
    time.

Coming home from a spin down the coast on Sunday afternoon, Lisa and I were
at the lights and an old "tricked up" lime green Hyundai Excel with mags,
loud boom box and 50-something yr old 'grooving' to his music pulled up.
This guy looked waaaay cool - you only had to ask him. I'm sure he would
have told you. He looked every bit the 20 yr old he thought he was...
(*irony needle should be moving to the right...*)

He sat there and looked at us while revving his car against the clutch, half
an eye on the light change. We looked at him and both nearly fell off the
bike laughing. Needless to say, he dumped it, a bit of screeching later and
he was about 100m behind us on a normal take-off on the 'Bird after about 3
secs. Next lights - same again. Next - same again but by now he was
obviously getting flustered. We didn't get off the next line at all as I
couldn't see the road through the tears! :)

Seriously, we share the road with some dumb asses.

So that's about the best for me so far. Shitbox Hyundai Excel vs new XX
    (2-up I might add).

Any more great match-ups to speak of??

    Cheers,

  2. I used to race some of my car mates in thier fast cars on my CBR250RR. These
days some of them would beat it. None of them come close to the ZX6R.

My favourite story in this vein was when I was riding my wife's CB250 (not a
CBR, the good old CB250) and thrashed a similarly "tricked up" Excel (who do
these people think they are kidding...?) twice out of the lights. It was
being driven by a young gentleman of middle-eastern appearance, replete in
    his backwards baseball cap ensemble...

I was wearing office clothes so I didn't look particularly "fully sick" that
day, which must have only added to the insult of getting caned by a commuter
    bike.

Aaaah Manning, you are a cunning linguist. Very nice and rich in the
telling! I can just imagine the scenario. hehe

  5. On 17/11/03 9:55 PM, in article
I reckon you should repost and cross post this to aus.cars, but replace
Excel with V8 of choice, WRX Sti or any RX derivative.

    I'd be happy to watch.

Dave Ello is of the opinion:
Me on my GT750, James on his ZX10 (no performance mods) with his "not a
featherweight" better half on the back, against some generic riceboy. Now,
it was no surprise that the ZX10 came off very well, but I was quite pleased
when my shagged motor turned the riceboy into a mirror mote.

Pity we never saw him again - I would have liked to have asked how it felt
to be beaten by a 20 year old touring motorcycle...

But, on the upside, it tee-dub's bike of the year in 1982. That still
    freaks me out...

    Yep!
    Ford Econovan against postiebike!
Lanesplitted to front of a row of traffic, van next to me edges up and revs
    its hear out...
Lights go green, I've hit 70kph and he's a spot in the mirror!

More fun are the hotted up cars that I have no chance of beating, when they
have four slicked hair punks in the car and they all go nuts because they're
    beating a postiebike... woo!
Next light and I lane split right past em - that's a laugh!

  8. I never get a chance to take on the champs in their fully worked
datto's (and their richer mates in newer fully sick plastic
fantastics) around here. They only come out when it's raining and then
it's only to spin their wheels.

I'm right here Hamish, no need! :)

a cheap excel, an angle grinder, a big shot of nitrous and a scatter
shield for the driver... I'd certainly be there to watch...

raises my happiness quotient for the next 10 mins or so every time I see
a bike on the back wheel... if I thought giving it a rev and acting like
a dickhead at the lights would achieve this, then depending on mood I'd
    probably have a go :)

    Ooohhh yes. Delicious isn't it?

So you nailed an econovan? Noice one. Friends of mine bought his and hers
postie bikes and rode around Tas. They've got a few great similar stories.
My fav. is when Pippi was tucked in hard and caining the little CT for all
its worth, squeezing every bit of its 85 km/h out of it. She rounded a
bend - hair flowing out behind her and past some cafe racer taking a drink
standing next to his R1. As she went past, he caught a glimpse and sprayed
his mouthful all over the R1 laughing! Pipp almost came off laughing too.
Would have been pretty damned funny. :)

It certainly makes my heart glad to float through an intersection on the
    back wheel.
The occasional ****-up (and embarrassment) is washed away when I nail that
glorious ejaculation of speed and balance!
Erm; sorry.... what was the subject?

I enjoyed your tale as well. Although taking on *anything* with 4 wheels on
a XX is well, just plain unfair :) Still, they have to learn somehow.

  14. That sounds like a great idea how to get rid of drivers. Angle grind them,
put a scatter shield round 'emand stick Nitro up their clacker in an Excel.

    Tops!

As much as I detest crossposting - I would certainly in this case engage in
    some wicked "crossposing"... :)

Sad reality is that the joy of it all would probably be lost amongst the
    majority of that lot...

Cheers. Perhaps we should join the mutual admiration society. :)

As for the 'Birdy Num-num, I do thinketh so. As much as I miss the whole
Duck experience - the feel, the sound etc., there's nothing at all quite
like winding up that big smooth motor and tagging along for the ride. If
you can do it and be entertained by motorists at the same time, all the
    better!

Thing is, my guess is that most of the time, the wannabe cage racers perhaps
think we are racing when in fact we're not at all. For me a normal take-off
is aimed at clearing the metal madness (ie. get out front quickly but
sensibly) and then maintain a normal pace (ie. somewhere near legal) out on
my own. This usually means that nothing will be anywhere near me - other
than the odd GT2 going for it or perhaps 285 kW Commode, but that's about
    it.

I'll be into a crosspost compilation for sure. :)

every so often someone has a run with the goldwing...
years ago...v8 shorty cruiser sitting at lights revving, quick blat on
throttle of cb1100 with tranzac pipe, driver looks over and says he probably
    wont worry about it then.
all the time in my car...rx-7 S4 with haltech / to4, front
intercooler...looks completely stock with non turbo bonnet and all...but
everyone has to have a go
most of the time they go roaring off into the distance as i motor along
sedately...i did take on a 250 sportsbike thing the other day...and won,
from standing start...also amused a 750 or 1000 sportsbike rider on the
highway by trying to race it...he was up for a run all right but was much
    quicker than the car

Idiot in Adelaide with a Volvo 242GT with a Volvo Racing sticker, dumping it
at the lights and squealing the wheels. When I'd caught my breath from
laughing, I showed him what first gear on the Pig could do...

Stopped at the next set of lights stood up and looked behind to see him
finally catch up and make for the hairpin left. Gave it a gutful on the apex
and ended up looking at the gutter...reversed, straightened up and took off
    again, muchly embarassed...

Had tears of laughter running down my face...
