Whereas it's one of the few books I've ever given up on.

And probably about to give up on Wolf Hall shortly.

Anyone know when the new Harry Potter's out?

My sister-in-law used to be a French teacher - even had a degree in it
IIRC, but she couldn't speak French to save her life. 'Nuff said.

Russian wasn't Finno Ugric last time I looked - and if you *do* study a FU
language, you realise where reverse Polish Notation came from! Actually,
Hungarian as an example, is very instructive - gives a whole new
perspective on language structure without having to learn a new alphabet.
Unlike Russian (oh, I wish I'd paid attention in Russian classes at Six
Form) and Bulgarian - why did St Cyril feel the need to confuse things?

You may be waiting some time.

On a book note, I'm reading When We Were Romans at the moment. Seems
    alright.

"Cloud Atlas"? **** me, I was hooked from start to finish on that.
Nearly as much so as Adam Roberts' "New Model Army" which I've just
    finished - fucking brilliant.
whereas I'm waiting eagerly for the sequel to come out.
    idiot.

L's daughter has extra tuition in German, & it seems to be working as
she got A* in the mock. But the tutor couldn't translate several words
on the paperwork we got from the German plod last year without looking
    them up.

Back when I was a kid my sister had a friend round one evening and she
was doing her French homework. I was baffled by her pronunciation - her
teacher apparently thought it was alright to pronounce -er endings so
that, say, aller rhymed with hammer rather than ballet.

    Quality teaching.

Yes, it's always the teacher's fault.

I think the answer has to be "a relevant language". English, Spanish,
Chinese, Russian, Arabic etc. I mean, who speaks french apart from the
frogs, some weird Canadians and half a dozen Africans?

It's not an easy read, but my real mistake was putting it down before
we moved and having picked it up again, I'm finding it very difficult
    to get back into.

And ICBA to start all over again.
    Grumpy.

I was only pre-empting the expected "you need to read children's books"
posts. I never have, and never will, read HP.

Is it just so you can all understand the posts about Lidl on
es.charla.moteros? It's all they talk about - apart from some stuff about
    motorcycles of all things.
