Looking at getting a pair of pants for winter,as well as weekend rides etc.

I'm trying to decide between leather or textile (Cordura 600D)

I would like to be able to wear these over my jeans for a short daily
commute, but also taking into account the possibilty of rain, would like
    something waterproof too.

I do have waterproof rain pants at the moment, but am thinking if I go
leather..I might end up having to wear 3 pairs of paints if it's raining !!!

I also like the idea of a removable liner...makes sens if I'm waering over
my jeans to have the option to remove that..

But I really like leather too...and have found a pair of Rjays "Daytona" at
    a very good price..

So are leather waterproof at all ???

And which would be warmer on long rides (worn over my jeans) ?

    Decision, decisions... any oppions appreciated..

If it's worn over jeans, then it needs to be loose. Else it will be
    majorly uncomfortable behind the knees.
Not really. You can dubbin them or use similar things, but on the
whole they are no more than water resistant - will be OK in a light
    shower.
    Leathers aren't warm.

If you want something to keep you warm and dry then you either get a
good textile set that fits over the clothes you intend to wear, or you
get the leathers you lust after and a one piece suit to wear over
those in the wet and some merino thermals to wear under them.

Note that things bought to wear over clothes are loose and ill fitting
when not worn over them, same as they can be if worn without their
liners. I've found that liners are more trouble than they are
worth... but if you want to go that way, pay much attention to fit in
all the permutations you are considering.

I'm really happy with my aerostich, but I did get it when the $A was
    US90c...

Designed to fit over clothes, easy to get in and out of (don't
underestimate the real hassle of getting leathers over jeans),
    comforable and waterproof.

Not going to be svelte and stylish though, but then nothing's going to
    do that for me.

Thanks guys, some good points there to consider... I think I'm leaning
towards Textile for my commute, and maybe later on I'll cash out on some
firm fitting leathers (with thermals under them) for the weekend rides..

I'll just keep my waterproof overpants in the panniers in case of heavy
    rain..

  5. The only instance where leather is a better option than textile is when
you're sliding down the road and then it's always superior.

In all other conditions a good brand textile wins out, they're warmer or
cooler depending on the liner being in or out. They're waterproof or at
least more waterproof than leather, which is at best water resistant if
    treated continuously.
Leather made to measure can be very comfortable but on the whole textile
    wins out.

Good quality textile garments incorporate "armour" which improves their
    performance
in a crash situation but modern leather also has "armour" so they're always
going to be the better option once you've left the bike and are sliding,
    shitting and shredding.

The thing about all motorcycle gear is...that often the thing we spend all
our money on.. never (hopefully) come into play... incl. helmets
    especially..

So I guess I tend to lean towards comfort weather proof etc.. more tan the
"sliding down the road" scenario... since most likely 99% of the time I'll
be "on" the bike.... I know I'll probably open a a tin of proverbial worms
here... but it is kind of true...

    you forgot longevity...

I thought Nylon had a half life of 257 years.

There's plastic bags made in 1847 still washing up onto the Antarctica
    shoreline
Better still an anthological dig in the UK recently unearthed plastic bags
left by the Romans. The pretext to the ABS plastic later used on modern
    Ducati's

Leather lasts 73 1/2 years at best, and a lot less in Queensland feed lots.
