The trouble is that the St John Ambulance people who supply most (if
not all) of the track side medical personnel at motorcycle racing in
the UK all do the same course as we recently did and they are shown
that you can support the head in the right way.

It's worth noting that the instructors told us that it's better for
someone to end up with spinal injuries than to be allowed to die from
asphyxiation so they might be playing something of a percentage game.

  3. Oh yes, but on this occasion it was many years ago, pre barriers.

Water skiing and approaching a beach. The boat ahead of me was towing a
skier who was taking advantage of a few mooring buoys to ski round on
the way in. He hit one at +25mph(?). The resulting somersault knocked
him out and left him floating face down in the water and not moving. His
boat did not have an observer and didn't know what had happened. I slung
my line and coasted to a stop next to him. Fortunately I was only chest
deep in water, I ditched my ski, turned him over, emptied his mouth out
as he wasn't breathing. Did the head back nose pinch blow in his mouth.
Nothing. Second or third time and he spluttered into life and threw up
all aver my wet suit. Fortunately he hadn't breathed in water only
swallowed it. Of to A&E for a check up and he was back later that day.

Thats taking personal protective equipment a bit far. :)

Good job though. At least you had the sense to do something. I turned up to
an arrest at work the other day where the arrest call was put out. Got into
the room to find a member of staff stood there doing nothing. I asked what
the matter was to get a reply "I don't think she has an output".

Boy, did I let rip after we sorted that out. A good 2 minutes without basic
life support in a hospital until the arrival of the arrest team is not a good
    thing!
