Letters from Abroad

I was texted this morning by Bee who as some of you know is doing an
insane 3 week Himalayan cycling tour. Lhasa to Kathmandu. Completed
the crossing of a 5250m pass and staring up at Everest. A day more to
reach the E Base Camp.

This surprised me more than a little. In the most god forsaken corner
of the world her GSM phone is working?!! So I did the obvious thing and
called, well it isn't my bill is it..... sure enough a familiar voice
answered, with a noticeable time lag "you are calling me!! have you any
idea how much this will cost us?". "Cost you actually" ;o)

So a brief conversation included that although they mostly had phones
off to conserve batteries, at almost no point in the journey had they
been out of GSM coverage.

This rather astounds me, what a strange world we live in. Obviously a
lot more people live and travel in the region than I had imagined.

Stranger still was the rather Bearesque comment "I've managed to log
into Facebook a couple of times". So they even have some data coverage
up there on the roof of the world.

 

Isn't that exactly what I said? "well it isn't my bill is it....."

 

Um, no it won't be your bill, it'll be hers.

Don't mobiles still work on the caller only pays the normal rate for
calling the other mobile, but if the receiver is out of the country
they pay the international bit?

 

Like I said yesterday (1984), they don't work!!

 

Yeah, I can't fucking read and issued a cancel message immediately.

 

So much for you being the intelligent one, eh?

 

It's a Friday afternoon. Leave me alone.

Brilliant. The best bit is that I can't tell whether he really thinks
it's Friday afternoon, or he did it for comic effect.

 

I think he really thought it was Friday afternoon, the stupid Brummie.

The latter, which seems to have netted a few.

 

It was a joke. Although it did feel like Friday afternoon this
afternoon, in the sense that I was looking forward to the pub and
distinctly unmotivated.

 

I know that feeling, but I found a cure.

If you want a job in Newcastle, the place I'm going to is still
recruiting...

 

I really fancy a beer.

 

I haven't had a beer in nearly 2 weeks now.

 

Isn't special brew mandatory for a chap in your position?
