The Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, stayed at a luxury resort on the
Central Coast last week while Labor leaders insisted he was too ill to
make a statement on the tsunami disaster.

Mr Latham, who has been criticised by Labor MPs for not publicly
expressing his sympathy for victims, was seen with his family at the
pool of the resort for three days from January 2, according to three
    other guests.

His spokesman said on January 5 that Mr Latham had fallen ill with a
repeat bout of pancreatitis about 10 days before and was under "strict
orders" from his doctors to rest up.

A guest at Terrigal's Star of the Sea resort, Shirley Corbett, of
Sydney, said yesterday that she and five friends saw Mr Latham, his
wife, Janine, and two young sons, Oliver and Isaac, over the three
days. "He was with the kids at the pool. There was nothing unwell
    there about him."

Don't be too concerned as he will be replaced by Kevin Rudd within 3 months.
His "illness" and not his unpopularity will be used as the excuse for his
demise. It's all falling into place, surely you can all see that.

Whilst Rudd doesn't have the "go" for a leader, there is no one else in the
Labour party that fits the bill and that is sad. The only high profile
members of the Labour Party are the Premiers of Qld and NSW, like them or
hate them, they have to be persuaded if Labour is to be taken seriously and
have any chance of gaining government in the foreseeable future.

The writing has been on the wall since the election drubbing. Politics? You
can read it like a book.

  5. Relevance to the motorcycle newsgroup?
If there isn't one then do not post to newsgroups that have no relevance
    to the message.
Besides there is no election so what was the point of this?

There was a sellout cricket match at the MCG yesterday with all proceeds from
the ticket sales were going to the Tsunami Appeal. I wonder how much John
    Howard paid for his ticket...

    Cricket honours the dead
    By Shaun Phillips
    January 11, 2005

World cricket added more than $14.6 million to the Asian tsunami relief
effort last night as Australian skipper Ricky Ponting spearheaded the Rest
of the World XI to victory in the historic one-day international match at
    the MCG.

The Rest of the World thumped the Asian XI by 112 runs in the World Cricket
Tsunami Appeal match, which drew the cream of the world's cricketers for a
match played in a competitive, but light-hearted spirit.

In an emotion-charged prelude to the match, the wife of victim Troy
Broadbridge was warmly welcomed by Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting in the
    World XI rooms.

Trisha said memories of the churning waters of Phi Phi Island that on Boxing
Day swept away her husband of just one week were never far away.

"I'm having trouble sleeping," she told wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. "I'm
waking up every three hours ... I'm having nightmares about the tsunami,
about keeping my head above the water."

Trisha was on the verge of tears at one stage but appeared determined to
remain upbeat. She spoke of her husband's selflessness, the way the
Melbourne footballer pushed her out of the way before he was taken in the
torrent. "His face was the last thing I remember before I passed out," she
    said.

Trisha thanked the cricketers for their commitment. She also spoke with
Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden and West Indian maestro Brian Lara.

The wheelchair she returned in from Thailand was gone but she was still
    limping badly.

While a black eye and other bruises and abrasions are starting to heal,
Trisha said doctors had warned her about the risk of infection.

Wearing a shirt signed by the players, Trisha ventured on to the ground
before the game started, where she was embraced by an emotional John Howard,
who tossed the coin to start the match.

Stars from eight countries - Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and
England; India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh - and more than 78,000
    fans converged on the MCG.

The match raised more than $14.6 million for World Vision's tsunami projects
with neither the crowd nor players forgetting the real reason for the match.

Nine Network chief Kerry Packer chipped in $3 million and beer giant
Foster's $1 million as a telethon held in conjunction with the cricket
    raised about $9 million.

A cheque for $14.6 million was presented to World Vision immediately after
the match. The money included gate receipts and donations made by those who
attended. But just exactly how much money will be raised won't be known for
    several days.

People originally from the tsunami-affected countries of Sri Lanka and India
flocked to the ground. Sri Lankan citizen Dinash Perera, 23, sat behind a
home-made sign that said simply "Thank U Australia".

"In time of disaster, Australia led the world," Mr Perera said.

Cricket Australia's Peter Young said $5.5 million for the tsunami appeal was
effectively in the bank before a ball was bowled. That money was from ticket
sales, broadcast rights in 122 countries and sponsors.

"The other money will come from corporate donations, auctions on eBay, food
and beverage sales, car parking and the donations to the World Vision bins
around the ground," Mr Young said. "The response has beeen enormous."

And if you object to x-posting, why x-post back to a.p? Kindly stick to
your own patch as you have just finished advising others to do. You
wouldn't like to be branded a Labor hypocrite, now would you!?
