You're right about the libre/gratuit difference - "Free as in speech,
not free as in beer".

Normally, the revenue's generated from either wrapping services
(consultancy, support) around the open source software or by selling
proprietary (non-GPL) plug-ins or add-ons. Community edition free, "Pro"
edition with the toys costs.

 

Well, probably because Oracle have decided that they own the name
OpenOffice, and the open source community can't use it. So the guys[1]
did what they do, forked the source and renamed it, so Oracle can take a
jump and the developers dump the original.

Libre - presumably a nod to the fact that this one really is free.

 

'cept Oracle don't, globally - hence why it's called OpenOffice.org.

Italians like using the phrase "parking libero" to fleece tourists. Often
translated as "free parking" whereas "parking available" would be more
accurate in the context.

 

Yep - we've been caught out by exactly that. Luckily we were on the
bike so were able to bypass the exit barrier.
