This one's OK - few owners, current owners are Alfa nuts and it's a 2l
Lusso Sportswagon with no mods. Plus it was quite cheap and has full
service history with *very* recent (as in a few weeks and < 10 miles
ago) cambelt with everything. *Very* quiet engine.

Couple of rust spots above the windscreen but they're still at the
    "easily treatable" stage.

It's UKRM so you either get off the wall answers, or off the cuff. You got
both but ALL of them were trying to direct you to doing the job the most
effectively and that's to use gasket material/paper rather than goo.

But if he takes your advice on anything, he'll not have a working bike at
    all before long.

I've got a set of those "wad punches" here and they've never been used in
anger. I have a feeling that when I eventually get round to doing the
rebuildon the VN motor they will be though.

    I can imagine.

I've got about half a dozen ball peins of varying sizes and every time I've
needed to use one at home (where I do the majority of engine work) they're
    sat at work gathering dust:)

    Huh?
Read the instructions on the Hylomar packet.
Read the instructions in almost any Haynes BOL.
How come my bikes work and I have never had a problem with this method.

Anything more than the thinnest of smears risks getting globs of sealant
    clogging up the works.

So the parts you're attempting to re-join had a paper gasket fitted at the
    manufacturing stage?

I think I'd stick with what the manufacturer used myself, but that's just me
    being an odd ****.

You really should consider not biting everytime someone pokes you.

    Yes, do keep up.
Except the manufacturer stopped using paper gaskets.

And that's not the reason you're an odd ****, either.

And the question was asked (by Champ as I recall) "Did they change anything
other than simply drop the gasket". No reply about that, so the qwuestion
remains. I suspect they made the two parts slightly more amenable to one
another removing the need for a paper gasket.
I know when to use paper and when not to spuff goo though.

You can suspect all you like, but I suspect that the bloke who advised
me that I should use liquid gasket has reassembled more 900SS engines
    than you.
    Spuff? You pervert.
