No doubt, but how any engines that he owns has he used goo on rather than
    doing the job properly?
    Goes without saying.

I've got no fucking idea, I don't know how many of his 900SS engines
he's had to take apart. I'll give you his contact details if you want to
    carry on this argument.

If the manufacturer uses goo, how is that *not* doing the job properly?

  3. MacFrame used goo on his 600SS clutch cover. If it's not an area that's
under pressure (and it isn't), it should be OK. I'd prefer a gasket
because I'm a bit anal about this sort of thing, but properly used goo
    is fine.

For what it's worth, I have no qualms about using the right kind of goo
in some circumstances. Things have moved on since the days of red
Hermetite, though I see Silicone RTV is still about. I was just
counselling caution and sparing usage. In fact, the only thing that
eventually got the big bore barrel and piston on the Nordwest to work
well enough to at least survive runs up the Ramsey 5000 hill was a tiny
smear of Comma Instant Gasket round the coolant passages in the solid
copper head gasket. I tried the bead of gooier stuff left to go nearly
try as recommended by Frigerio, but the thin coating of liquid left to
go just tacky was more successful. TBF though the new cylinder studs
    might also have helped.

As I recall it, *you* were the one asking the questions. as someone who's
been pulling motors of all types apart and putting them successfully back
together again for more than 40 years, I thought I'd try to steer you down
the path to a perfect seal, but if you want to experiment, by all means go
    for it.
If the manufacturer changed the cases to *allow* the use of oo, then there
isn't a problem at all, but the question still remains... *DID* they, or are
*you* substituting goo for a proper gasket as supplied with the bike when it
    was built?

Manufacturing tolerances have improved out of all proprtion since the
introduction of CNC machines allowing for thousands of the same component
actually being the same as each other. That certainly wasn't the case when
parts were hand milled, so maybe Ducati went CNC after your bike was made
which meant that goo would be fine.

Anyway, I'm not arguing, I'm *trying* to save you the trouble of doing the
same job twice or doing the same job twice AND diging out slivers of goo
from places you wouldn't believe they can get if just a touch too much is
    used.

Having said that, you're the expert andd you'll know exactly how much goo to
use and exactly how to apply it so I've absolutely no worries.

Yes, but you appear to have gone out of your way to answer questions
that weren't answered in the first place.

Champ, that is. I don't know whether Beav's had a bang on the head or not.
