    Hi

Any help gratefully received. I am looking to buy a Yamaha FZS1, but
have never bought new before. The list price is £7,599. Can anyone
tell me if it is normal to have to pay list price for a bike, and
perhaps point me to somewhere where it's not?

    cheers

    Negotiate.

There will be an amount in the total profit margin on the bike that the
dealer will be looking for to make an actual profit, and an amount that
he will be prepared to give away as an over-allowance on a part
exchange. If you have no part exchange then you should be able to get
this amount discounted from the purchase price. As to how much this is,
I'm afraid I've no idea - I've never sold new bikes, only cars (and then
a long time ago) - but the principle should be the same.

Also, if you are going to borrow from somewhere to finance the bike,
offer to use the dealer's finance - he gets a kickback from the finance
company and this will contribute towards his total prifit on the deal,
giving him more room to negotiate.

Don't be afraid to deal hard - he *wants* to sell you a bike, so it's
unlikely that he'll tell you to **** off if he thinks you are a
*genuine* buyer, no matter how silly your offer. You just have to find
a figure where you are both happy to deal.

Thanks all for the advice - The suggestion I should wait 'til next year
is persuasive if I can only get it for list price. I am not after the
FZS1 because I must have the latest newest thing, I just like the look
of it, and I guess I'll still like it in 10 months or so.

    cheers
