Hi, what are people's opinions on this? What is the typical cost
including installation, and who in the South Bay installs them? I am
stuck with the carport dilemma, and it is not long enough for me to
park my truck in to block the bike. I would also think of the silent
alarm type thing and me running outside with several firearms, but here
in Cali' it isn't worth going to prison over. I bought a new (used, but
new to me) baby, and am hesitant to bring it from my buddy's garage in
a rural area down to the Bay Area.

What is the opinion on how much of a deterrent is, say, a disc lock and
cable to the non-professional bike thief? I live in Mountain View and
understand there was a rash of bike thefts around here like two years
ago. My '88 ZX-10 (which still looks good, but is what it is, not as
scrumptious as a whole lot of other bikes) was only messed with once,
and that by punk kids who didn't know what they were doing--- they just
gouged one of the front rotors with cable-cutters. I've only ever had
disc locks on it, front and back. Thanks.

If you want a professional opinion, ask your insurance company to quote
comprehensive insurance on the bike at your location. If the premium is
trivial, you can infer that the theft risk is low; if not, you may want
to consider what extra precautions to take so that your bike will not be
    the one stolen.
