I've asked a similar thing before but on a slightly different vein..

If you were going to buy a SOB and the logbook was signed but not in the
vendors name and address [1]. I know my feelings on the matter but how
    would *you* view that situation?

[1] Basically I have a number of machines (all legit) that I want to sell
where I haven't transferred them to me as the keeper.

  2. Dodgy.

He's flogging it double quick as the bike's dodgy
or he's dodgy (or a dealer).

How would you view it if the logbook was in his name but had only been so
    for six or so weeks?

If it's as cheap SOB then I'd not really be bothered too much. I might
phone the name on the logbook just to see if it's legit or I might just ask
if it's OK to phone the PO. A 'proper' bike I'd be more concerned unless
    it's a dealer.
How do you get them taxed?

sweller wibbled like a little girl....
When I bought the ZZR the dealer didn't have a V5, just the bottom slip.
I bought it anyway and applied for a new logbook. But that was from a
dealer. I should have been more careful, cos the dealer was in Ormskirk,
just down the road from Scouseland, and it turns out the last owner was
    from Liverpool itself.

  8. Generally, I assume that either the bloke is turning it around swiftly,
or can't be arsed, or is doing a swift bit of Gatso/VED evasion. I know
    I do it.
One of the questions I always ask is: "Is it registered to you at the
address where it can be viewed?" and if the answer is "no", then I probe
further. It doesn't bother me as long as the bike is kosher and I'm
getting it at the price I want. But in many cases you come across a
durr-brain who knows *nothing* about the bike, and in cases like that I
don't even bother to look at it. There are plenty more bikes out there.
