London drinks, re-visited

I'm going to be spending next week in a Travelodge in London, close to
Liverpool St Station, on my tod.

    Two questions:

    1. Can anyone recommend decent pubs and/or restaurants near there? (For
values of decent that include the following criteria: not too expensive,
not likely to get beaten up, proper beer, not full of Cockney tossers or
    market bankers.)

    2. Anybody fancy a drink on Wednesday, it being my birfday 'n all?

The other problem is that I'm not sure how easy Usenet access will be,
but I should be able to get my email, so drop me a line and I'll let you
    have my mobile number.

Or, if I'm not responding to email either, bribe AndrewR suitably[1] and
he might let you have my mobile number.

[1] A couple of rare editions of the Bible usually does the trick.

There's zillions of pubs around there... hard to think of (m)any that meet
    your criteria though.
    Mebbe try http://www.beerintheevening.com/

As for restaurants, again there's loads, more than you can wave a pointy
stick at, what do you want?

He wants cheesy peas, and ale served like they do up north.

    ****, you're right: found 757 pubs within 3 miles of E1 7
Ummm... Mexican... Indian... *shrug*... anything, really.

E17 is nowhere near Liverpool St, and you're bound to find more of those
Cockney rascals that you speak of there as well :)

    E1 7xx, not E17 nxx, you numbskull.
    Of course. Why EC2, though?

Yeuch. Too much like mushy peas.

    Black pudding. And stotties.
    Yes: cheap.

    See, special Boeing pubs :)

    <fx: Checks AutoRoute for EC1 7)
Oh, I used to work just over the road in EC3A.
Given where you're at I suspect that the Hoop & Grapes on Aldgate High
Street might be a reasonable watering hole for you to start your liquid
exploration of the area... not as stuffed with suits as some other spots
thereabouts, beer is variable IME, but generally an OK place.

Try not to wander east or too far north from your locale, not if you don't
want to meet Cock-a-knee wankers anyway (cept mebbe Brick Lane, good curry
    down there!).

Oh, The Old Tea Warehouse on Creechurch Lane, that's not too bad a watering
hole, the staff are typically a right old grin, especially if they figure
out that you're not a stuffed suit (they cater for them loads, they have to,
but they don't particularly like many of them).
You like decent pizza (not the Pizza-To-Go sort)?
There's two places just by where you'll be at that I liked (didn't eat out
much around there, had a staff canteen and of an evening just drank or went
    home).

Of an evening Scuzzis (sp?) on Creechurch Lane (look it up), not a bad spot
for a few glasses of plonk and a decent pizza. Some chance of flirting with
lasses too, can't remember if it's every night, but they have music, a
singer, and that sort of thing... fairly low key type of place, bit of a
    laugh IME.

Lunchtime, The Village, in a wide paved alleyway just off Dukes Place,
opposite Irongate House... easy to spot cos the cafe next door usually has
tables and chairs outside (even in winter, usually), look for the doorway on
the alley that leads downstairs, nice pizza, specially the salmon one, but
the chilli oil is totally wussy, no heat at all.

    Other scoff.
There's Thai^2 on Minories, OK for a lunchtime bite, basement level is cheap
and cheerful, think the ground level is spensive, dunno, never eaten on the
ground floor... might well be open evenings too.

Obviously most if not all of the pubs serve lunchtime food, but not too many
do of an evening, though I *think* the Three Lords on Minories does / did.

Damn, see the thing is, like I said, I didn't eat around there too much,
    there was no point...

Oh yeah, if you're stuck for lunchtime scoff then as a rule the City is
extremely cheap by London standards for sarnies and that, but if you're a
"how bloody much? I'm not paying that" tight firsted northerner then check
out Kelly's on the corner of Aldgate High St and Minories, cheaper than a
cheap thing on cheap day and not bad munch either. There are probably more
sarny shops than pubs though, so you'll be spoilt for choice.

That'll do for a few cheap beers. I'm not proud.
    The what now?

Isn't it all smog and pea-soupers?

There's a Wetherspoons down on or just off Trinity Square, Tower Hill IIRC,
well within walking distance of EC1 7xx
If he's a "fook you bloody southern shandy drinking cockney wankers; how
fucking much? I'll not pay that I'll tell thee! By 'eck we're real men oop
north" type then fucking bollox to him, let him spare the rest of us the
displeasure of his company by spending his time surrounded by tourists in
    the above mentioned Wetherspoons.

Meanwhile, I'll sit here enjoying my pork pie and pint or three of Old
    Speckled Hen :)

Actually, I can't imagine that London prices are much more expensive
than the trendy bits of Newcastle.

I'm just not sure if they'll be that keen on me bringing my whippet in...

Ooh, that's about a 15 second walk from my office. I'll email me number so
call me and we'll see what we can do.

As to pubs which are within a 2 min walk from the travelodge - the Slug
and Lettuce is ok'ish for a chain pub. Avoid the Springbock bar. The Purple
Poet on Middlesex St is ok too.

And I can recommend eating at Haz which is opposite the Travelodge, and
also the new noodle place inside Cutlers Gardens, again, next door almost
to the Travelodge. There's alos a nice tapas bar around the corner too.

Bah, that's my fav. It's gone all up market since it
was the Eastern Monk though. No more sticky carpets...
Did you know it's actually the Baracuda Bar now?
Bar Celona, or something like that, on Middlesex St?
