With an ever-increasing number of grandchildren, the time has come for
us to swap the double bed in our small spare bedroom for some bunk
beds (one on top of the other). We've had a look at the usual places,
such as Ikea. and the only half-decent solid wooden ones we've found
so far were in MFI. Anyone got any suggestions?

If there's no panic, try your regional Freecycle. They come up regularly on
    the ones I am on.

If you want decent quality wooden ones then go to a place specialising in
pine furniture. They'll have both the pikey Argos variety that breaks if
someone farts and a much better quality choice too. Cheap ones start at a
little over £100 but you'll need to pay £300 for a more solid one, ex
mattress. Google shows lots of mail order firms but IME you need to take a
look. "pine factory" and your location would be good search terms.

When I equipped my mum's house with beds for visitors I ended up choosing
metal ones. Decent quality metal ones ones are much cheaper than decent
wooden ones so you can spend a bit more on a decent mattress that people
don't moan about on every visit DAMHIKIJD.

Yup we got one of those.

The futon mattresses weigh a ton and some of the bolt-fittings failed - rang
Homebase and they sent some replacement round-section steel ones rather than
    the square-section alloy.

It's only seen occasional use and my only other issue is that the ladder is
on the end and is vertical, rather than on the side and sloped.
