  2. Ah OK. About the same as a standard living room lightbulb then. Unless
    you do 'atmospheric'.

    You mean 'shagmospheric'[1].

[1] Doesn't appear on Google so I hereby claim this as the first use of
that word. Anyone wanna help me get it in the OED? 'Shagmospheric - an
atmosphere specifically designed to improve one's chances of a shag
    i.e. 'shagmospheric lighting'.

Err no. A person is equivalent to a 100W lightbulb, more or less.

Surely that depends on how bright the person is?

  6. I'm afraid I don't speak your rural dialect old boy. The word doesn't
    appear in ones dictionary..
Get the kids at school to start using it. It'll soon make it's way into
the OED. Or get Viz to start using it.

    Thank you Mr. Obvious.

I got that kcal number off some random webshite, and in any case, I was
aiming for the upper bound. So, 1 human == approximately a 100W bulb
is a pretty good number to use for estimation, rather than Phil's 1 kW.

As far as what fraction is expressed as heat, I have no idea but I imagine
    most of it is.

Last time I wore a tie, I was in court. The time before that was a job
interview. I have to pop on a suite occasionally to meet clients who'd
expect it, but nobody ever expects me to wear a tie in a work
environment, which is handy because I absolutely loathe the things.

Well, actually, I think what I loathe is top buttons. But ties kinda go
    hand in hand.

AOL. The last time I wore a tie was last Friday for a wedding
anniversary party that specified 'jacket & tie'. I literally cannot
remember the last time before that - many, many years ago.

I regularly visit client sites where all the blokes wear suits & ties -
I usually turn up in jeans & a t-shirt. So far nobody's even given me a
funny look, never mind mentioned it.

Curiously everybody in our office wears jeans/t-shirts etc & we always
tell clients to 'dress down' if they visit us, yet they still usually
turn up in suits & ties. I think there must be a whole generation or
two of blokes who have no idea what to wear as an alternative for work.

  15. I've remembered the context - it was from a survival manual I skip-read
(I can't remember the reason - the chance of me getting into a
situation where I need it is asymptotically approaching zero) that
said the best way to warm someone with hypothermia (in absence of
technological means) is to strip down to the underwear and climb into a
    sleeping bag with them[1].
And then it said something to the effect of 'equivalent to sitting them
near a 1Kw heater' which my brain interpreted as 'a human being equals
    a 1Kw heater'.

    Which obviously isn't the case.

    Phil.

[1] And just hold them. OK?

  16. Our engineers wear collars and ties when they visit client sites
(although they take the ties off if they are working on stuff where the
    ties might be a hazard).
This job is the first one where I have always worn a shirt and tie - my
previous one I wore one most of the time but before that I don't think
    I ever really wore one.

Hard to accuse a Kentish Man of being a northerner. Or is it a Man of
Kent. It ran east-west where I'm from, and you were practically on it.

Ah. I was considering current location (otherwise it wouldn't bother
    Champ)

Man of Kent, by birth, though us Medwayites have long been unsure.

Gillingham is allegedly West Kent whilst Rainham isn't, despite both
    being East of the Medway.

In my case, born in Pembury, so south of the river, which I think makes
it east, kinda, despite being in west Kent.
