Anyone know if it can be applied for online? I tried googling, but can't
    find what I'm after....

Yes, it can, if you know your driver's licence number.

If you phone up, they do it there and then if you have a photo-type
licence. Should turn up a couple of days later.

I've just had to replace one that was stolen and found the phone service
very efficient. I even had all the entitlements on the new licence that
were supposed to be there, which was a nice surprise.

You had to change? I can't (and don't want to) change my UK licence.

  14. It (the UK licence) is valid until expiry - ie when you get to 70 (or
whatever age it is). Most coppers don't really know this, but can
    easily check up on it.

However, most foreign coppers believe that the expiry date of the photo
ID is the expiry date of the licence (certainly here in NL, as you have
to renew the *licence* frequently) - so make sure you get a new photo
part (assuming you're not on the old paper style) long before it
    'expires'.

Quite. The bloody annoying thing is that the authorities (read: prefectures)
know this but the coppers don't. I have to explain to them each time there's
a "control". I even used to keep a piece of paper that I'd downloaded
from service-public.fr which explains that my licence is valid and doesn't
    need to be changed.

As it goes, I believe that I can drive lorries of a heavier weight on my UK
licence than my French peers. Whilst I don't have to drive lorries on a
regular basis, there's no way I'm giving up this right, without a fight.
Never though about that. I've still got 4 years to go, before I come to that
    hurdle.
