....but my hearing, as well as that of any pedestrians within 50 yards of it,
is going to go to an early grave, if I don't do something about the can on
    the CBR.

Fortunately, it is one where the outer sleeve is hooked up to the ends by
way of allen bolts... so my plan now, is to repack the can - someone has
obviously removed all the wading that was originally in it, and whilst it
sounds nice on tickover etc., it's way too loud when you're on the move,
especially when you're giving it beans.

The last time I ran a can this loud, I got collared for speeding, having
announced my imminent arrival rather more than I would have liked, to a
    stationary plod.

So... anyone know of anywhere that sells exhaust packing?

Not seen any for ages, but to be fair, I've not exactly been looking up
    until now...

Not only that, but what's the rule of thumb - pack the can as tightly as you
can with the stuff, or just wind enough round the baffle to give it a thin
    layer?

Whoa, good suggestion ta... bar the fact it wants a tenner postage for
    something that costs £4.99!

Both the local bike shops I use sell it, so it seems likely plenty of
others will, especially ones that do off-road stuff.

    Is loft insulation fireproof?
At least you'll get a nice big roll :)

Will probably break down more than conventional packing, and give any
tailgating cagers a nice kick-start to some sort of terminal lung disease,
whenever you give it beans to dust them!

Trust me (or ask Pip). Your pipes aren't actually that loud. Just know
    when to roll off.

A bit tighter than you can, if possible. One trick is to use masking tape to
hold it tight and make it easier to fit inside the can. Tighter = more
    silent
and my guess is that a thin, loose layer would disintegrate rather quickly.

Screwfix sell cans of expanding Firefoam!
Simply spray into your silencer and hey presto!

****Please Note I have never tried this and take no responsibility for
    exploding mufflers ;-)****

  14. I have got a spare new Micron repack kit suitable for a 4.5 inch alloy can.
The insulation is glass fibre with a heat reflective backing.

I bought it to repack the Akrapovic on the 9r but when I opened it up the
(kevlar) insulation was in perfect condition.

You can have it for the price of postage. Its not heavy so it should only be
    £4 ish to post.

Many thanks for the offer, but I managed to get some from the local Honda
    dealers yesterday.

It gets noticeably louder when the bike is hot - quelle surprise, what with
    metal expands etc.

Anyway, I shall see what it performs like later, once I've packed the can
    out.
